What this question tests
Strategic vision and pitching ability: can the candidate reason about a real trend, then build a focused, defensible startup thesis around it.
How to approach it
- Name three real current tech trends briefly, then commit to one, for example AI agents that can take autonomous action on a user's behalf.
- State the market opportunity: businesses want to automate multi-step workflows currently requiring a human to operate several tools.
- Pitch a startup idea: an AI agent platform focused on a specific vertical, such as automating vendor procurement for mid-size businesses, rather than a general purpose agent.
- Explain why this vertical: narrow scope means higher reliability and clearer ROI than a broad, all purpose agent, which is harder to trust today.
- Lay out a three year strategy: year one, prove reliability in one workflow and one industry, year two, expand to adjacent workflows, year three, become the default automation layer for that vertical.
- Address risk: model reliability and liability for autonomous actions, and how you would mitigate that with human approval checkpoints early on.
What a strong answer includes
- Commits to one narrow, defensible vertical instead of pitching a broad, generic AI agent platform every VC has already heard.
- Sequences the three year plan with a believable trust-building arc, narrow and reliable first, broader later, rather than promising scale immediately.
- Names the real risk, liability and reliability of autonomous action, and proposes a concrete mitigation, human approval checkpoints.
Common mistakes
- Pitching a broad, undifferentiated AI idea that any competitor could equally claim.
- Skipping the risk discussion for a product that takes autonomous action on a user's behalf.
Likely follow-up questions
- Why would this vertical be defensible against a larger, well funded general purpose competitor?
- What would your first customer's onboarding actually look like?
