What this question tests
Tests strategic tradeoff reasoning between a free, ad-funded model and a cleaner but revenue-losing alternative.
How to approach it
- Clarify the frame: is this about removing all ads, or about the density/placement tradeoff, since the analysis differs.
- Lay out the case for ads: they fund the free product for billions of users and are the majority of Meta's revenue.
- Lay out the case against: ad density hurts session quality, trust, and can push users to less-monetized competitors like TikTok or Discord.
- Propose the real lever isn't binary but ad relevance and load, better targeting and lower frequency can raise revenue per ad while cutting total ad count.
- Recommend measuring net effect via revenue per user against retention and time-spent, not ad count alone.
What a strong answer includes
- Reframes the false binary (ads vs no ads) into the real question, ad quality and load, which is what Meta actually controls.
- Uses an illustrative tradeoff, e.g. assume cutting ad load 10% but improving relevance raises revenue per ad 15%, netting positive.
- Notes Facebook's business model makes zero-ads infeasible without a paid-tier alternative, and floats a hypothetical ad-free subscription as the real alternative.
- Grounds the answer in retention risk: poor ad experience is a leading churn driver among younger users.
Common mistakes
- Arguing 'no ads' as if it's a realistic option without addressing how Meta would replace the revenue.
- Ignoring that ad relevance, not just quantity, drives most of the user experience complaint.
Likely follow-up questions
- How would you test whether lowering ad load actually increases long-term revenue?
- Would you ever recommend a paid ad-free tier? What would that cannibalize?
