What this question tests
Tests forward-looking market judgment on e-commerce, requiring a specific, defensible prediction rather than a generic trends list.
How to approach it
- Pick one or two concrete shifts to argue rather than surveying every trend, such as AI-driven personalized shopping and faster same-day fulfillment becoming table stakes.
- Ground the prediction in current signals: rising same-day delivery investment from Amazon and Walmart, and AI shopping assistants already shipping.
- Segment by category: commoditized goods (groceries, essentials) competing on speed and price, versus discovery-driven categories (fashion, home) competing on personalization and content.
- Explain the mechanism driving the shift, such as AI reducing search and comparison friction, making conversion less dependent on price alone.
- Address what this means for winners and losers, favoring retailers with strong logistics networks and first-party data over pure marketplaces.
- State the prediction with a rough timeline and what would prove it wrong.
What a strong answer includes
- Picks two specific, well-supported predictions instead of listing every buzzword trend.
- Grounds each prediction in a current, real signal rather than pure speculation.
- Uses illustrative numbers as assumptions: assume same-day delivery penetration grows from roughly 10% to 30% of online orders in five years.
- Names who wins and loses, not just what changes, showing strategic implications.
Common mistakes
- Listing generic buzzwords like AI and personalization with no mechanism or evidence.
- Giving predictions with no timeline or way to be proven wrong.
- Not distinguishing how different product categories will be affected differently.
