What this question tests
Judgment and market awareness: can you form and defend an opinion about a real product trend with clear reasoning, not just an opinion.
How to approach it
- Pick a real, currently-hyped product category (e.g. a specific AI wearable, or a novelty social app).
- State the reasoning framework: does it solve a durable pain point, or does it ride a moment of hype/novelty.
- Check for a retention signal: is usage driven by curiosity (one-time try) or a repeatable habit.
- Compare to past examples of hyped products that faded (state this as a pattern, not a hard fact) to support the reasoning.
- Give the verdict with a clear 'why', tied to a specific weakness (e.g. no clear daily use case, high price, or a bigger player can copy it).
- Acknowledge the counterargument briefly to show balanced thinking.
What a strong answer includes
- Names a specific, real product rather than a vague category, showing the candidate follows the industry.
- Grounds the prediction in a concrete mechanism (no repeat use case, easily copied by an incumbent) not just 'it's a fad'.
- Acknowledges a scenario where it could survive, showing balanced judgment rather than a snap opinion.
- Keeps the answer opinionated and decisive rather than hedging on everything.
Common mistakes
- Refusing to commit to an answer and listing pros/cons with no verdict.
- Picking a product with no real reasoning behind why it will fade.
Likely follow-up questions
- What would have to be true for it to actually stick around?
- What's a past example of a hyped product that did survive, and why was it different?
