What this question tests
Genuine product sense and passion for a specific product, requiring authentic, checkable detail rather than generic praise.
How to approach it
- Pick a real, specific mobile game, ideally one the candidate actually plays, so the answer sounds authentic and detailed.
- Identify the game's core loop and what makes it engaging, like a specific progression or social mechanic.
- State a specific, real pain point in that game, for example a repetitive late game grind that causes players to churn after reaching a certain level.
- Segment players: new players in the early fun phase versus veteran players hitting the identified grind wall.
- Propose a focused improvement targeting the veteran player retention problem, like introducing more varied late game content or social co-op challenges to break the monotony.
- Define success as retention rate for players past the identified drop off point and session frequency for veteran players.
What a strong answer includes
- Uses a real, specific game with checkable, concrete details rather than a vague or generic answer.
- Identifies the exact mechanic causing disengagement, like a late game grind, rather than a general it gets boring.
- Gives an illustrative number, for example assuming veteran retention at 90 days improves by 10 percent with the proposed change.
- Considers monetization trade offs, since many mobile games rely on the exact grind mechanic being changed to drive in app purchases.
Common mistakes
- Picking a fake or overly generic answer that doesn't show real, personal familiarity with the game.
- Ignoring that the pain point identified might actually be an intentional monetization lever the studio wouldn't want removed.
Likely follow-up questions
- Why do you think the developers designed it this way in the first place?
- How would you validate that this change wouldn't hurt monetization?
