What this question tests
Tests forward-looking market judgment and the ability to turn a forecast into concrete strategic advice for the incumbent producer.
How to approach it
- Pick one concrete product or service to argue, such as traditional cable TV bundles, rather than hedging broadly.
- Lay out the forces driving obsolescence: streaming unbundling, cord-cutting among younger viewers, and ad-supported streaming tiers.
- Assess certainty and speed, noting cable has already been declining for over a decade, making this a defensible pick.
- Advise the producer to pivot toward owning underlying content and sports rights and licensing across streaming platforms rather than defending the bundle.
- Propose a transition plan and rough timeline for the pivot.
- Define success as content-licensing revenue offsetting the decline in bundle subscriptions.
What a strong answer includes
- Picks a specific, defensible example instead of a vague trend.
- Grounds the obsolescence in a real structural force, not just a claim that people dislike it.
- Gives concrete advice beyond innovate, naming the specific pivot into content-rights licensing.
- Uses illustrative numbers as assumptions: assume cable subscriptions decline 5% a year, reaching a tipping point by year seven.
Common mistakes
- Picking something already obviously dead, which shows no real insight.
- Giving generic advice like invest in digital without a concrete plan.
- Not addressing what the producer's actual asset, content or distribution, is worth in the new world.
Likely follow-up questions
- What would make you wrong about this timeline?
- What's the first move you'd make in year one?
