What this question tests
Reverse-engineering strategic rationale for a real, successful product using known facts and a real competitive target.
How to approach it
- Ground in known facts: the feature launched in 2016, building on the long-standing organic behavior of buying and selling in Groups.
- Identify the strategic driver: capture existing user behavior natively rather than losing it to Craigslist or eBay.
- Note the engagement angle: local commerce is high-frequency and drives daily active usage, valuable for an ads business needing engagement depth.
- Note the monetization angle: while largely free to list, it deepened local commerce ad targeting data and kept users in-app longer.
- Note the competitive angle: undercut a dominant local classifieds incumbent by offering an easier-to-trust, identity-linked alternative.
- Conclude it was a low-cost extension of behavior users already exhibited on the platform, not a brand-new bet.
What a strong answer includes
- Cites the real origin, buy and sell Groups, as the grounded basis, not a guess.
- Connects the launch to the platform's ads business model, engagement depth and local commerce data, rather than treating it as commerce for its own sake.
- Names the real competitive target explicitly.
Common mistakes
- Giving an ungrounded, speculative answer with no reference to the real product history.
- Ignoring the connection back to the core ads revenue model.
Likely follow-up questions
- Why do you think there are no listing fees on this feature?
- What metric would you use to justify its continued investment?
