What this question tests
Tests comfort making decisions under genuine ambiguity, without data, and the reasoning process used in place of a clean analysis.
How to approach it
- Pick a real recent decision where data genuinely didn't exist or arrived too late to matter, not one where you simply skipped looking for it.
- Set up the stakes briefly: what was being decided and why it couldn't wait for more information.
- Explain the reasoning used instead of data, such as customer conversations, an analogous past launch, or a stated principle you defaulted to.
- Show how the risk of being wrong was managed, a small reversible test, a clear rollback plan, or a tight timebox to revisit.
- State the outcome honestly, including if it was wrong or still unresolved, and what it taught about deciding without data.
What a strong answer includes
- Picks a genuinely ambiguous call, not a disguised data-driven decision, matching the question's premise.
- Names the specific non-data inputs used, qualitative signal or a stated principle, rather than just gut feeling.
- Shows risk mitigation, reversibility or a fast feedback loop, which separates good judgment from recklessness.
- Is honest about the outcome rather than claiming a clean win.
Common mistakes
- Describing a decision that actually had data available, undermining the premise.
- Claiming pure gut instinct with no reasoning process, which reads as reckless.
- Not acknowledging any risk or way to know if the call was wrong.
