What this question tests
General metrics fluency, building a monitoring dashboard for an unspecified feature by reasoning about what any feature needs.
How to approach it
- Ask what the feature is and its intended user outcome, since the specific metrics depend entirely on that.
- Define the primary success metric, the core action the feature is meant to drive, e.g. adoption or task completion.
- Add funnel metrics beneath it, awareness, activation, and repeat usage, to see where users drop off.
- Add guardrail metrics, error rates, latency, or complaint volume, to catch unintended harm.
- Segment by user type and platform, since a feature's effectiveness often varies by device or user tenure.
- Propose the dashboard layout, headline metrics at top, funnel breakdown below, and segment filters for drill-down.
What a strong answer includes
- Anchors the answer in a chosen concrete example feature, e.g. a ride-share tipping feature, rather than staying fully abstract.
- Distinguishes north star, funnel, and guardrail metrics clearly, showing a structured metric tree rather than a flat list.
- Proposes segmentation, by platform or user tenure, that would reveal where the feature over or underperforms.
- Explains the cadence and audience for the dashboard, e.g. daily for the feature team versus weekly for leadership.
Common mistakes
- Staying fully abstract without picking an example feature to reason through.
- Listing metrics with no structure or hierarchy.
- Omitting guardrail metrics that would catch negative side effects.
Likely follow-up questions
- Walk me through the specific metrics for a feature of your choice.
- How would you decide which metric is the primary one.
- What would trigger an alert on this dashboard.
