What this question tests
Strategic roadmap thinking for leveraging a new data asset across multiple parts of a company's product and business.
How to approach it
- Clarify what sensor data is available, e.g. battery health, driving behavior, location, and diagnostics, and confirm privacy and consent constraints.
- Identify internal use cases, predictive maintenance alerts for owners and engineering feedback for future vehicle design.
- Identify external or monetizable use cases, insurance partnerships using driving behavior data, with explicit opt-in consent.
- Prioritize by near-term value and feasibility, predictive maintenance likely ships fastest since it directly serves existing customers.
- Sequence a roadmap, phase 1 predictive maintenance alerts, phase 2 engineering feedback loops, phase 3 opt-in data partnerships.
- Define success metrics per phase, reduction in unexpected breakdowns for phase 1 and, later, partnership revenue for phase 3.
What a strong answer includes
- Separates use cases by who benefits, the owner, the company's engineering team, or external partners, since each has different priority and complexity.
- Prioritizes owner-facing predictive maintenance first, since it directly improves the product experience and is achievable without new partnerships.
- Explicitly addresses consent and privacy before any data monetization use case, showing awareness of a real constraint in this space.
- Sequences the roadmap with dependencies, building the data pipeline for maintenance alerts before attempting more complex partnership use cases.
Common mistakes
- Jumping straight to selling data to insurers without addressing consent and privacy first.
- Proposing an unordered list of use cases without prioritization or sequencing.
- Ignoring the internal engineering feedback loop use case, which is often the fastest win.
Likely follow-up questions
- How would you handle user consent for data sharing.
- What would you prioritize first if resources were limited.
- How would you measure the ROI of this data strategy.
