What this question tests
Strategic product thinking on a hardware product competing against much larger incumbents like Apple and Samsung.
How to approach it
- State Pixel's current position: strong camera and clean Android experience, but low market share.
- Identify the real constraint: distribution through carrier deals and retail presence, and brand awareness, not just features.
- Segment the opportunity: Android upgraders wanting a clean, Google native experience versus first time buyers in price sensitive markets.
- Prioritize one lever given Pixel can't out market Apple, for example doubling down on on device AI features.
- Propose a concrete move: exclusive AI camera and assistant features plus aggressive carrier bundling in a few target markets rather than a global blitz.
- Define success as unit sales growth in target markets and Pixel's share of Android flagship sales.
What a strong answer includes
- Names the real constraint, distribution and brand, instead of assuming better hardware alone will win.
- Picks AI differentiation as a specific, defensible edge given Google's model advantage, rather than generic better camera.
- Gives an illustrative target, for example assuming a goal of doubling US carrier attach rate over 2 years.
- Considers price segmentation, like a budget A series line to capture price sensitive buyers.
Common mistakes
- Proposing feature parity with the iPhone as the strategy instead of a differentiated angle.
- Ignoring that hardware sales are heavily driven by carrier subsidies and retail placement, not just the product.
Likely follow-up questions
- Which markets would you prioritize first, and why?
- How would you measure whether AI features are actually driving purchase decisions?
