What this question tests
Tests root-cause diagnosis of a bimodal satisfaction distribution rather than reacting to the average rating alone.
How to approach it
- Explain why the average is misleading: a 3-star average hides two very different experiences when 40% love it and 40% hate it.
- Hypothesize the segments driving the split, for example desktop or Workspace power users being happy versus consumer mobile users hit by bugs.
- Read a sample of 1-star and 5-star reviews for recurring themes, crashes and notification bugs versus reliability and video quality.
- Prioritize fixing the driver behind the 1-star cluster first, since it likely causes churn, rather than adding features for the happy segment.
- Track the rating distribution shift over time, not just the average, plus crash-free session rate after the fix ships.
What a strong answer includes
- Explicitly calls out that average rating is the wrong single metric here, since distribution matters more for a bimodal pattern.
- Grounds diagnosis in reading actual review text and segment data before proposing any action.
- Proposes a concrete, plausible fix hypothesis, stability bugs, grounded in what commonly tanks chat-app ratings.
Common mistakes
- Proposing to add more features without first diagnosing why the unhappy half is unhappy.
- Reacting only to the average rating and ignoring the bimodal split entirely.
Likely follow-up questions
- How would you segment the 1-star reviewers further?
- What would you do if the two groups turned out to be different platforms, iOS versus Android?
