What this question tests
Ability to independently scope a PM's priorities for an existing product, showing structured judgment under an open-ended prompt.
How to approach it
- Clarify what triggered this role, is Events underperforming, or is this a general 'own this surface' prompt.
- Review current performance, RSVP volume, attendance rate, and event creation trends, to find where the biggest gap is.
- Talk to users, event organizers and attendees, to understand friction in creating, discovering, or committing to events.
- Prioritize one or two initiatives, e.g. improving event discovery relevance or reducing no-shows, based on where the data points.
- Propose a concrete next step, such as a feature test or a metrics deep dive, rather than boiling the ocean.
- Define how you would measure success for the prioritized initiative, e.g. RSVP-to-attendance conversion.
What a strong answer includes
- Starts with diagnosis, current metrics and user research, rather than jumping straight to feature ideas.
- Picks one clear priority, e.g. reducing no-shows, and explains why it matters most based on stated reasoning.
- Shows structured thinking under ambiguity, turning a vague prompt into a scoped 90-day plan.
- Ties the plan to a measurable outcome instead of ending on a vague intention to 'improve engagement'.
Common mistakes
- Listing many unprioritized ideas without picking a focus.
- Jumping to feature ideas without first diagnosing the current state.
- Ending without a way to measure success.
Likely follow-up questions
- What would be your first 30 day plan in this role.
- How would you decide between growth and quality initiatives.
- What data would you want on day one.
