What this question tests
Whether you can diagnose an operational bottleneck and propose a fix grounded in the actual cause of the delay.
How to approach it
- Clarify what's driving the line: order volume exceeding kitchen throughput, or a pickup process problem like unclear order staging.
- Segment the wait: time from order placed to ready, versus time from ready to actually handed to the customer.
- If kitchen throughput is the cause, look at order batching and peak-hour staffing as levers.
- If pickup handoff is the cause, look at unclear staging areas or customers arriving before or after the order is ready.
- Propose a fix matched to the diagnosis, such as a dedicated pickup shelf with order status visible, or staggered pickup time slots.
- Define success metrics: average wait time and order accuracy, with a guardrail on kitchen stress or missed orders during peak.
What a strong answer includes
- Separates prep-time delay from handoff delay instead of treating long lines as one undifferentiated problem.
- Proposes a fix matched to the actual bottleneck, such as staggered pickup windows if handoff, not prep, is the issue.
- Gives an illustrative number, assuming average wait exceeds a target of 5 minutes during lunch peak.
- Adds a guardrail, order accuracy, so speeding up pickup doesn't increase mistakes.
Common mistakes
- Assuming the kitchen is the bottleneck without checking whether pickup handoff is actually the slower step.
- Proposing more staff as the only lever without considering process changes like staggered pickup slots.
Likely follow-up questions
- How would you use data to tell prep delay apart from handoff delay?
- What would you do if adding staff didn't reduce the wait time?
