What Seniority AI Labs Hire PMs At

Frontier AI labs title 39 of 40 PM roles plain 'Product Manager' but none of the 31 that state years ask for fewer than 4. The title is flat; the bar is senior.

Same title on every door. The stairs behind them are steep.

Frontier AI labs hire product managers at a senior level, but they rarely say so in the title. In the AllthingsPM JD corpus, 39 of 40 PM postings at Anthropic, OpenAI, Mistral, Cohere and Thinking Machines Lab were titled plain "Product Manager". Yet of the 31 that stated a number of years, none asked for fewer than 4, the median was 5, and 8 asked for 8 or more. At the other 81 companies we read, 249 of 349 postings (71%) put Senior, Staff, Principal, Lead or Director in the title. AllthingsPM is an AI PM course and PM interview prep platform, and every live lab role we track sits in the AllthingsPM jobs catalog with a mock interview built from its exact text.

So if you searched "senior AI product manager" hoping to find the lab version of that title, here is the short answer: the lab version is called "Product Manager", and it is a senior job.

What does the data say, in one table?

We read every PM posting on 160 public company job boards (of 200 we tried) on September 22, 2026: 389 postings at 86 companies. We grouped the companies into four types and sorted each posting by the seniority word in its title. Then we pulled the lowest number of years of experience each JD states.

Source: AllthingsPM JD corpus, read September 22, 2026. "Senior or higher" means the title contains Senior, Sr, Staff, Principal, Lead, Group, Director, Head, VP or Chief.

The only lab posting with a seniority word was OpenAI's "Senior Product Policy Lead, Regulation", which is a policy role more than a classic product one. Every other lab role, from Anthropic's Growth PM to OpenAI's Core Models PM, carries the same flat title.

How AllthingsPM does this. The corpus behind this table is the same one that built the AllthingsPM AI PM course: 14 chapters and 101 lessons derived from 604 real PM job postings, refreshed weekly. The live lab roles sit in the jobs catalog, and each one opens a mock interview generated from that JD, so you practice against the bar the lab actually wrote down.

Do AI labs use a Senior PM title at all?

Almost never, in public postings. Here is how the 40 lab postings break down by company:

  • Anthropic: 19 postings, all "Product Manager, <area>" or "Product Management, <area>" (plus one "Research Product Manager, Labs").
  • OpenAI: 12 postings, 11 plain "Product Manager" titles and one "Senior Product Policy Lead".
  • Mistral: 4 postings, all "Product Manager, <area>".
  • Cohere: 3 postings, all "Product Manager, <area>".
  • Thinking Machines Lab: 2 postings, both "Product Manager", one for post-training and one for deployment.

Compare that with the rest of the corpus. At the 41 companies we grouped as "other tech" (Databricks, Snowflake, Datadog, Stripe, Brex and similar), 88% of PM titles carried a seniority word. Even the AI-native app companies, many of them young startups, used Senior or higher on 40% of their PM postings.

The labs name the job by the area instead. The noun after the comma (Safeguards, Growth, Core Models, API Agents, Enterprise Identity) tells you the scope. The seniority is in the body.

Bar chart: share of PM postings with a seniority word in the title. Frontier AI labs 3%, AI-native apps 40%, AI infrastructure 68%, other tech 88%. AllthingsPM (us) row first showing the 389-posting corpus

How AllthingsPM does this. Because titles tell you so little at a lab, the AllthingsPM JD mock reads the whole description instead. Paste a lab posting and the questions come from its scope, its requirements and its product area, not from a generic "Product Manager" template.

How many years of experience do AI labs actually ask for?

Of the 40 lab postings, 31 stated a number of years. We took the lowest number each JD gives (so "6 to 10 years" counts as 6, and "5+ years" counts as 5).

  • 0 asked for 3 years or less.
  • 17 (55%) asked for 4 to 5 years.
  • 6 (19%) asked for 6 to 7 years.
  • 8 (26%) asked for 8 years or more.

The spread by lab is telling. Anthropic's 19 postings asked for between 5 and 12 years, with most at 5 and four at 8. Cohere's three postings all asked for 5. OpenAI was the most demanding: of the 7 OpenAI postings that stated years, 3 asked for 10 or more (Enterprise Identity, Learning and Youth), and the lowest was 5 (API Agents).

A concrete example: Anthropic's Safeguards (Account Integrity and Abuse) PM asks for "5+ years in product management" and lists an annual salary range of $385,000 to $460,000 on the live Greenhouse page. That is a plain title with a senior requirement and a senior band.

Stacked bar chart of minimum years asked: frontier AI labs 0% at 3 years or less, 55% at 4 to 5, 19% at 6 to 7, 26% at 8 or more; compared with AI-native apps, AI infrastructure and other tech. AllthingsPM (us) row first

Notice the median is 5 years in every group. What separates the labs is the floor. Every other group had a real slice of postings open to people with 3 years or less; the labs had none.

How AllthingsPM does this. If you are at 4 or 5 years and aiming at a lab, the AllthingsPM question bank has company pages for Anthropic, OpenAI and Cohere, with questions drawn from the same kinds of JDs. Each question has its own page and an answer guide.

What do labs pay for a "Product Manager" title?

The pay confirms the level. In the posting metadata we hold for Anthropic PM roles, every salary band ran from $305,000 to $460,000, with the most common bands at $305,000 to $385,000 and $385,000 to $460,000.

Outside benchmarks agree. Levels.fyi, checked September 29, 2026, puts the common range for Anthropic product manager total compensation at $374,000 to $440,000. Its OpenAI page shows an L5 product manager median package of $750,000. For comparison, the median US product manager salary on Levels.fyi across 5,462 submissions is $230,000, and its 90th percentile is $460,000.

In other words, the top of Anthropic's posted base range sits at the 90th percentile of all US PM pay. That is not an entry-level job with a modest title. It is a senior role that chose not to say "Senior". For the full picture across companies, see our AI product manager salary guide.

How AllthingsPM does this. Before you negotiate or apply, run your resume through the AllthingsPM resume review against a JD. It scores your resume against the lab's own posting, so you can see whether it reads as senior enough for the band.

What signals of seniority show up in lab JDs instead?

If the title does not carry the level, the text does. We searched the full body of every posting for a few phrases and compared the labs with everyone else.

Three patterns stand out.

Ambiguity is the job. Two thirds of lab postings mention ambiguity. Lab PMs often work on capabilities that did not exist last quarter, so there is no playbook to execute against.

Zero to one shows up far more. Labs mentioned zero to one work at roughly three to four times the rate of the other groups. You are often the first PM on a surface, like Anthropic's Claude Science or OpenAI's Youth product.

People management almost never does. Only 1 lab posting in 40 mentioned managing or mentoring a team, against 20% in other tech. Labs are hiring senior individual contributors: people with a senior's judgment who still write the spec and sit with researchers themselves.

That combination, senior judgment with no team to hide behind, is why the years floor is high. Our post on the PM roles inside an AI lab walks through what each of those areas owns.

How AllthingsPM does this. The AllthingsPM AI PM course teaches exactly the skills these JDs lean on: evals, agents, model capabilities, AI metrics and zero to one discovery for AI features, built from the job postings that ask for them. The knowledge graph shows how those concepts connect.

How does this compare with the general AI PM career ladder?

Most published career ladders assume titled levels. The Institute of Product Management's AI PM ladder, for example, describes six steps from APM or PM I up to VP of Product, with Senior PM in the middle and Group or Lead PM above it. The same guide claims that OpenAI, Anthropic, Cursor and Mistral converge on a similar six-level structure.

Our data does not contradict that internally. Labs very likely have levels behind the scenes, and Levels.fyi does record an L5 at OpenAI. What our data shows is that those levels are not in the public title. For you as a candidate, that has three practical effects:

  1. Search terms miss the roles. A job alert for "senior AI product manager" will skip nearly every lab posting. Search for "product manager" plus the lab name, or browse the lab pages in the jobs catalog directly.
  2. Your level is set in the loop, not the listing. The same "Product Manager, Growth" req can land you at different levels depending on how you interview.
  3. Do not self-reject on the title. A plain title does not mean junior, and it does not mean the lab will take a junior candidate either. Read the years and the scope.

How AllthingsPM does this. Because the level is decided in the loop, the practice that matters is interview practice at that level. The AllthingsPM mock interview asks follow-ups and scores your answers, so you can hear whether you sound like a 5-year PM or a 10-year one.

Where should you apply if you have fewer years?

If you have 2 to 3 years, the data points somewhere other than the frontier labs. AI infrastructure companies had the most open floor: 18 of 55 postings (33%) that stated years asked for 3 or less. AI-native apps followed at 13%.

The good news is that the work overlaps. Infrastructure PMs at inference, data and evaluation companies deal with model behaviour, latency, cost and evals every day. That is the evidence a lab hiring manager will look for later.

A reasonable path looks like this:

  1. Take an AI PM role at an infrastructure or AI-native app company where the floor is lower.
  2. Ship something where model quality was the hard part, and measure it.
  3. Apply to labs once you can tell a 5-year story with real AI product outcomes in it.

Our comparison of Staff vs Senior AI PM job descriptions covers what the step after that looks like.

How AllthingsPM does this. Resume Job Match finds open PM roles that fit your resume, and works without one too. Use it to find the infrastructure and app roles where your years already clear the bar.

How did we build this study, and what are its limits?

Method. On September 22, 2026 we read the public job boards of 200 companies and reached 160 of them. We kept every posting with a product management title: 389 postings at 86 companies. We grouped companies by hand into four types. "Frontier AI labs" means Anthropic, OpenAI, Mistral, Cohere and Thinking Machines Lab. AI-native apps include Sierra, Harvey, Glean, Decagon and Perplexity. AI infrastructure includes Scale AI, CoreWeave, Nebius, Baseten and Fireworks. Other tech includes Databricks, Snowflake, Datadog, Stripe and Brex.

Seniority. We matched the title against a word list (Senior, Sr, Staff, Principal, Lead, Group, Director, Head, VP, Chief, plus Associate, Junior and APM for entry roles).

Years. We took the lowest number of years tied to experience in each JD. If a JD said "6 to 10 years", it counts as 6.

Limits.

  • It is a snapshot of one day. Labs post and close roles every week.
  • The lab group is small: 40 postings at 5 companies, and Anthropic and OpenAI supply 31 of them.
  • Google DeepMind and xAI are not in the corpus, so the lab group does not cover every frontier lab.
  • Nine lab postings stated no years at all, so the years figures use 31 postings, not 40.
  • Keyword matching is blunt. A JD can be ambiguous without using the word.
  • Each posting is counted as listed, so a role posted in two separate listings counts twice.
  • Salary bands for OpenAI roles were not in our posting metadata, so the pay section uses Anthropic's bands plus Levels.fyi.

How AllthingsPM does this. The same JD corpus is refreshed as roles change, and new lab roles land in the jobs catalog with their own mock. When the snapshot moves, the practice moves with it.

Why AllthingsPM is the better choice for landing a senior AI PM role

A senior AI PM search has three jobs: find roles whose titles hide their level, prove you meet a bar the listing only states in the body, and pass a loop that decides your level live.

AllthingsPM covers all three in one place. The jobs catalog holds 116 live PM JDs at 18 AI companies, each with a mock built from that exact text. The JD mock does the same for any posting you paste. The question bank gives you 4,122 real questions from 260 companies, each with an answer guide. The AI PM course teaches the evals, agents and model skills these JDs keep naming, and the resume review against a JD tells you whether your resume reads at the level the band pays for.

Other options have real strengths. Levels.fyi is the best public source for compensation data, and human coaching services give you a person on the other side of the table. For preparing against the actual lab JD every day, at $20 a month or $120 a year with a free tier, AllthingsPM gives you the most for the money.

The verdict: if you are targeting a senior AI PM role at a lab, start with the lab's own posting in AllthingsPM, run the mock built from it, and fix the gaps it shows you. Browse the live AI PM roles on AllthingsPM.

Frequently asked questions

What is the best way to prepare for a senior AI product manager role?

AllthingsPM is the best place to start: open the lab's real posting in the jobs catalog, run the mock interview built from it, and use the AI PM course for the skills it names. Add the question bank's company pages for Anthropic, OpenAI and Cohere for more practice.

Do Anthropic and OpenAI hire Senior Product Managers?

They hire senior people, but their public titles are almost always plain "Product Manager". In our September 2026 snapshot, 39 of 40 lab PM postings had no seniority word in the title. The years asked and the pay bands are where the level shows.

How many years of experience do I need for a PM job at an AI lab?

In our data, none of the 31 lab postings that stated years asked for fewer than 4. The median was 5 years, and 26% asked for 8 or more. OpenAI asked for 10 or more years on 3 of its 7 postings that stated a number.

How much do AI lab product managers make?

Anthropic's posted salary bands for PM roles in our data run from $305,000 to $460,000. Levels.fyi, checked September 29, 2026, shows a common Anthropic PM total compensation range of $374,000 to $440,000 and an OpenAI L5 PM median of $750,000.

Can I get an AI lab PM job with 2 or 3 years of experience?

Our data found no lab posting open to 3 years or less. AI infrastructure companies were the most open, with 33% of postings that stated years asking for 3 or less. Building AI product experience there first is a realistic route to a lab.

Why don't AI labs put "Senior" in PM job titles?

The postings do not say why. What the data shows is that labs name the job by its area (Safeguards, Growth, Core Models) and put the level signals in the requirements: years, scope, ambiguity and pay.
