What this question tests
Tests product design under a real technical constraint, no connectivity, forcing trade-offs in content and interaction design.
How to approach it
- Clarify the constraint: no live data means real-time transit and live reviews are unavailable, so everything useful must be pre-packaged.
- Segment on budget or backpacker travelers in areas with poor connectivity, or any traveler wanting to avoid roaming costs.
- Identify the pain point: can't reliably navigate, translate, or find recommendations without data, and downloaded maps alone lack curated context.
- Design pre-downloadable city packs bundling offline maps, curated points of interest with descriptions, offline phrase and translation packs, and an offline-compatible walking-route generator.
- Define success as pack download completion rate before travel, in-trip usage of offline features, and post-trip navigation-confidence survey.
What a strong answer includes
- Designs specifically around the offline constraint, pre-packaged bundles with no reliance on live APIs, instead of a normal app with offline as an afterthought.
- Addresses translation as an offline-specific pain point that is often missed.
- Bundles curated context, not just raw maps, addressing the specific gap offline maps alone leave.
Common mistakes
- Describing a standard online travel app and just adding works offline as an afterthought.
- Ignoring translation and language needs, a real offline-specific gap.
Likely follow-up questions
- How would you handle updates to offline content once the user has already downloaded the pack?
- How would you size the download to avoid huge storage requirements?
