What this question tests
Whether the candidate can apply product sense end to end: picking a real user problem, a target segment, and a coherent solution, using a platform they understand.
How to approach it
- State a preference honestly and briefly, then move to the product, since the OS choice is just a framing device.
- Pick a specific, narrow user segment, for example commuters who use transit apps daily, rather than a broad audience.
- Name the core pain point that segment has today, and why existing solutions fall short.
- Propose one focused solution, describing the core flow in two or three steps.
- Define a success metric that reflects habitual use, such as weekly active use among the target segment, not just downloads.
What a strong answer includes
- Uses an OS-specific capability meaningfully, for example iOS widgets or Android's background location APIs, rather than treating it as decoration.
- Grounds the pain point in a specific, believable scenario rather than a generic statement like people want convenience.
- Prioritizes one feature for a first version and explicitly defers others, showing scoping discipline.
Common mistakes
- Spending too much time debating iOS versus Android instead of the product itself.
- Designing a broad platform instead of a narrow, testable first version.
