What this question tests
Operational problem solving across immediate tactical fixes and longer term structural improvements.
How to approach it
- Clarify the scope: is this in store checkout specifically, and during which hours does the complaint concentrate.
- Short term: add temporary express lanes for small basket sizes and redeploy staff during identified peak hours.
- Short term: introduce mobile or self checkout kiosks to increase throughput without requiring new physical space immediately.
- Long term: analyze staffing models and forecast demand by hour to permanently right size checkout capacity.
- Long term: invest in a more fundamental fix, such as scan and go technology, reducing the checkout bottleneck structurally.
- Define success as average wait time reduction in the short term and a sustained wait time target achieved through the long term fix.
What a strong answer includes
- Explicitly separates short term tactical fixes from long term structural investment, addressing both time horizons the question asks for.
- Names concrete, implementable short term actions, express lanes and staff redeployment, not vague 'improve efficiency' language.
- Gives an illustrative number, e.g. assumes current average wait is 12 minutes and targets under 5 minutes with combined fixes.
- Proposes a genuinely structural long term fix, scan and go technology, rather than just scaling the short term fix indefinitely.
Common mistakes
- Giving only one time horizon of fixes, either short term or long term but not both, when the question asks for both.
- Proposing vague ideas like 'improve staffing' with no specific implementable action.
- No metric or target tied to the proposed fixes.
Likely follow-up questions
- How would you fund the long term technology investment?
- What would you measure to know the short term fix worked?
- How would you get store staff buy in for these changes?
