What this question tests
Product sense applied to a specific platform's engagement levers, tied to a defined user segment and metric.
How to approach it
- Pick a specific segment to focus on, for example passive job seekers who log in rarely, rather than all users.
- Identify their pain point, feed content feels irrelevant or too sales heavy, giving little reason to return.
- Propose a feature, a personalized notification tying a job opening to a relevant profile view signal.
- Explain why this segment and feature were chosen, based on where the drop off is largest.
- Define the success metric, weekly return rate for that segment after 30 days.
What a strong answer includes
- Targets a specific underengaged segment rather than proposing a broad feed change for everyone.
- Names a concrete feature tied to LinkedIn's real asset, professional identity and connections, for example a curated industry digest.
- Sets a measurable target, lifting 30 day return rate for that segment by 10 percent, marked as an assumption.
Common mistakes
- Proposing generic gamification with no tie to LinkedIn's professional context.
- Not segmenting users, treating everyone as equally disengaged.
- No metric or target for the proposed change.
Likely follow-up questions
- How would you avoid making the feed feel more like spam?
- What would you measure to know this did not hurt job seeker trust?
