What this question tests
Product sense for a job search marketplace serving both job seekers and recruiters.
How to approach it
- Pick a segment, for example active job seekers applying to many roles versus passive browsers.
- Identify a pain point: applying to many jobs feels repetitive and seekers rarely hear back, creating low trust in the product.
- Prioritize application feedback over new discovery features, since silence after applying is the most cited frustration.
- Propose a feature showing application status (viewed, under review, rejected) sourced from recruiter actions in the system.
- Consider the recruiter side incentive: make status updates low effort so recruiters actually use them.
- Define success as reduction in seekers reporting no feedback and increase in application completion rate.
What a strong answer includes
- Targets a specific, widely known pain point, application black holes, rather than a generic 'better matching' answer.
- Addresses both sides of the marketplace, seeker transparency and low recruiter effort, not just the seeker experience.
- Gives an illustrative number, e.g. assumes only 20 percent of applications currently receive any status update.
- Proposes making the recruiter side effortless, for example one click bulk status updates, to drive real adoption.
Common mistakes
- Designing only for job seekers and ignoring what would make recruiters actually update statuses.
- Proposing a feature that adds recruiter workload with no adoption incentive.
- No metric tied to actual reduction in the core frustration.
Likely follow-up questions
- How would you get recruiters to actually update statuses?
- What would you do for roles that never get filled?
- How would you measure success beyond feature usage?
