What this question tests
Tests structured go-to-market strategy for expanding a product across languages, regulations and cultural context, not just translation.
How to approach it
- Clarify the scope: internationalization covers language, currency, payment methods, legal compliance and cultural fit, more than a simple translation pass.
- Prioritize markets using a scoring framework: market size, existing organic demand or usage, competitive landscape, and regulatory complexity like GDPR or data localization.
- Sequence the rollout: launch in one or two high-scoring markets first, English-adjacent or already showing organic usage, before a broader expansion.
- Address localization depth: language and currency first, then culturally adapted content and payment methods like local wallets, and finally region-specific features.
- Define success as market-specific activation and retention rates compared to the home market, and localization cost per incremental active user.
What a strong answer includes
- Distinguishes true localization, cultural and payment adaptation, from simple translation, a common but shallow answer to this question.
- Gives a concrete prioritization framework with named criteria instead of a vague go-everywhere answer.
- Ties success to retention in the new market compared to the US baseline, not just download counts.
Common mistakes
- Treating internationalization as just translating text without addressing payments, regulation or cultural fit.
- Trying to launch in many markets simultaneously instead of sequencing a prioritized pilot first.
Likely follow-up questions
- How would you decide when a market is ready for deeper localization, like custom features?
- How would you handle a market with strict data localization laws, like the EU or China?
