What this question tests
International market entry strategy: understanding a local market's constraints and picking a differentiated approach.
How to approach it
- Note Uber and Ola already operate in India, so Lyft would be a late entrant into a two sided marketplace with strong network effects.
- Assess India specific dynamics: price sensitivity, two wheeler and auto rickshaw demand, and driver economics on thin margins.
- Evaluate whether direct competition or a niche wedge, such as intercity or premium rides, has better odds.
- Consider a non organic path, for example acquiring or partnering with a regional player instead of building supply from zero.
- Recommend a narrow initial market, such as one metro city, to prove unit economics before wider expansion.
- Define success as driver supply density and ride completion rate in the pilot city within 6 months.
What a strong answer includes
- Explicitly weighs build versus partner versus acquire, since organic entry against Uber and Ola's incumbency is very costly.
- Names the real local dynamic, extreme price sensitivity and thin driver margins, instead of assuming a generic global playbook works.
- Proposes a differentiated wedge, e.g. focusing on outstation or intercity rides where incumbents are weaker.
- Gives an illustrative target, e.g. assumes needing 5,000 active drivers in one city before expanding further.
Common mistakes
- Recommending a straight copy of the US playbook without addressing India's price sensitivity and existing incumbents.
- Ignoring that Uber and Ola already have strong network effects and driver loyalty programs.
- Giving no phased plan, jumping straight to a national launch.
Likely follow-up questions
- Why would drivers or riders switch from Ola or Uber?
- What is your pilot city and why that one?
- How do you win on unit economics against incumbents with more scale?
