What this question tests
Diagnostic metric-tree thinking for a revenue decline at scale.
How to approach it
- Break revenue into orders times average order value before speculating on causes.
- Check the orders side: traffic, conversion rate, by category and region.
- Check the AOV side: mix shift to lower-priced items, discounting, and returns.
- Check external causes: seasonality, a competitor promotion, or a macro spending pullback.
- Check internal causes: a checkout bug, a pricing or inventory issue, or a fulfillment problem.
- Narrow to the most likely driver and propose next steps.
What a strong answer includes
- Decomposes revenue into orders times AOV before speculating on causes.
- Segments by category and region to localize whether the drop is broad or concentrated, e.g. one category like electronics.
- Considers seasonality explicitly, since a 10% monthly drop could be a normal post-holiday effect.
- Names a specific internal risk, e.g. an inventory or fulfillment issue in a key warehouse.
Common mistakes
- Jumping to 'a competitor is winning' without checking internal or seasonal explanations first.
- Not separating volume-driven from price-driven revenue decline.
Likely follow-up questions
- How would you rule out seasonality as the cause?
- Which metric would you check first, conversion rate or AOV, and why?
