What this question tests

Strategic prioritization under an open-ended, high-pressure prompt: can the candidate structure an answer quickly rather than freeze or ramble.

How to approach it

  1. Acknowledge the ambiguity briefly and state you would ask one clarifying question first, such as whether the CEO means the next quarter's priority or a longer term bet.
  2. State a structured framework you would use on the spot: current market position, biggest unmet customer need, and biggest competitive threat.
  3. Give a real, grounded example answer for the company being interviewed at, naming a specific opportunity or threat relevant to that company's actual market position.
  4. Justify the recommendation briefly with one supporting reason, such as a known competitive gap or emerging customer trend.
  5. Acknowledge you would want data and cross-functional input before this became a real commitment, showing this is a hypothesis, not a final answer.
