What this question tests
How the candidate approaches a new product surface (messaging) through a trust and safety lens, given YouTube's mix of minors, creators and strangers.
How to approach it
- Ask whether this is creator to fan messaging, viewer to viewer chat, or both, since the abuse surface differs.
- List YouTube specific risks: minors contacted by adults, scam links, harassment of creators, and CSAM exposure.
- Set a default restrictive permission model, for example only mutual subscribers can message a user.
- Layer detection: warnings for minors, classifiers for scam and grooming patterns, one tap report and block.
- Define a human review queue with severity based SLAs and escalation to law enforcement for the worst cases.
- Launch to a narrow, lower risk cohort like verified creators before opening broadly.
What a strong answer includes
- Names the two populations that make YouTube's risk different: millions of minors and creators with public followings.
- Defaults to closed, not open, messaging rather than shipping open chat and adding safety later.
- Gives concrete metrics: reports per 1000 messages, median time to review, repeat offender rate.
- Weighs encryption for privacy against the ability to scan for grooming and scams.
Common mistakes
- Describing chat features before addressing who can contact whom.
- Treating this like a generic messaging launch instead of naming YouTube's minor and creator harassment risk.
Likely follow-up questions
- How would you balance end to end encryption with detecting grooming or scam content?
- What would make you delay or kill the launch after the pilot?
