Short answer: a product manager resume gets through an ATS when it uses the same words as the job description it is sent to, in plain text a parser can read. In 371 current PM postings we read, the most common terms were roadmap (83%), strategy (80%), agent or agentic (73%), cross-functional (59%), stakeholder (48%) and go-to-market (46%). Lead each bullet with a verb like led, shipped, launched or defined, then prove it with a number. The fastest way to find your gaps is AllthingsPM's resume review against a job description: paste the JD and your resume, and it returns a match score, the missing keywords and suggested edits.
AllthingsPM is an AI PM course and PM interview prep platform. The keyword data below comes from the AllthingsPM JD corpus, a set of live PM postings read from public Greenhouse, Ashby and Lever job boards on 22 September 2026.
Which keywords do PM job descriptions actually use?
Generic "top 100 resume keywords" lists are built for every job at once. A PM recruiter searching an ATS types the words from their own posting. So we counted how often each term shows up in real PM job descriptions: 371 postings with a product title at 86 companies, most of them AI and software companies.
Two things stand out. First, the classic PM vocabulary still dominates: roadmap, strategy, cross-functional, stakeholder, prioritization. Second, AI words are no longer niche. Nearly three in four postings mention agents, 44% mention machine learning, 35% name LLMs and 32% talk about evals or evaluation. Because our corpus leans toward AI companies, treat those AI numbers as an upper bound for the whole market, and as a floor if you are applying to AI roles.
SQL, often called a must-have, appears in only 10% of these postings. Metrics (40%) and experiments (29%) show up far more. Recruiters care that you measure outcomes; fewer postings name the tool.
The PM keyword table
| Keyword group | Terms to mirror from the JD | Share of postings | Where to put it |
|---|---|---|---|
| Planning | roadmap, strategy, vision, prioritization | 45% to 83% | Summary and 2 to 3 bullets |
| Collaboration | cross-functional, stakeholder, partner with engineering and design | 48% to 59% | Bullets that name who you worked with |
| Launch | go-to-market, launch, ship | 46% to 67% | Bullets with a launch date and a result |
| Measurement | metrics, KPIs, A/B tests, experiments, analytics | 29% to 40% | Nearly every bullet, as the number |
| AI product | LLM, agents, evals, machine learning | 32% to 73% | Summary, skills line, AI project bullets |
| Tools | SQL, Python, Amplitude, Jira (only if the JD names them) | 5% to 10% | Skills line |
Shares from the AllthingsPM JD corpus, 371 PM postings, read 22 September 2026. Ranges cover the terms in each row.
How AllthingsPM does this: you do not need to count keywords by hand. Open the JD resume review, paste any PM posting and upload your resume. It lists the JD terms your resume is missing and suggests where to add them, so each application is tailored in minutes.
Does an ATS really reject most PM resumes automatically?
No. The popular claim that "75% of resumes are rejected by ATS" has no published study behind it. The Interview Guys traced it to Preptel, a resume service that made the claim in a 2012 sales pitch and closed in 2013 [1]. An Enhancv survey of 25 US recruiters found 92% said their ATS does not auto-reject resumes on formatting, design or match score; 8% had set up keyword-threshold rejections [2].
What an ATS does is store, parse and search. Jobscan's 2025 recruiter survey found 99.7% of recruiters use keyword filters to sort applicants and 76.4% start a search by filtering for skills [3]. That is the real risk: if your resume says "worked with teams" and the recruiter searches "cross-functional," you do not show up in the results. No robot threw you out; you were simply not found.
Knockout questions are the other filter. Work authorization, location or years of experience can screen you out before anyone reads a bullet [1]. Answer them honestly; no keyword fixes a hard requirement.
How AllthingsPM does this: the AllthingsPM resume review is built around the search, not the myth. It reads the posting the way a recruiter builds a search, then shows which of those terms your resume already covers and which it lacks.
Which ATS will read your PM resume?
It depends on the company. Jobscan found 97.4% of Fortune 500 companies use a detectable ATS in 2026, with Workday the most common at over 40% [4]. Outside the Fortune 500 the market is split: Greenhouse, Workday, Lever and iCIMS lead [4].
For PM roles at AI and startup companies, Greenhouse and Ashby matter most. Of the 86 companies in our JD corpus with open PM roles, 43 post on Greenhouse, 42 on Ashby and 1 on Lever. Greenhouse accepts .doc, .docx, .pdf, .rtf and .txt uploads [5].
How AllthingsPM does this: every role in the AllthingsPM jobs catalog is read from the company's own public board, so the JD you check against is the one the recruiter wrote. Try the Product Manager, Growth role at Anthropic: the page has a resume fit check and a mock interview for that exact posting.
Which action verbs should a PM resume use?
Action verbs matter for two reasons. Harvard's career office asks for language that is "specific rather than general" and "active rather than passive" [6]. And the verbs that PM job descriptions use are also search terms. In our corpus, build appears in 99% of PM postings, partner in 91%, own in 84%, define, lead and scale in 77% each, drive in 73% and deliver in 65%.
Pick the verb that matches what you actually did. Here are the ones that fit PM work, grouped by the part of the job they prove.
| Part of the job | Verbs | Example bullet start |
|---|---|---|
| Strategy and vision | defined, set, shaped, identified, sized | Defined the 2026 roadmap for... |
| Leadership and ownership | led, owned, drove, directed, championed | Owned onboarding end to end... |
| Collaboration | partnered, aligned, influenced, negotiated, unblocked | Partnered with engineering and design to... |
| Discovery | interviewed, validated, uncovered, researched, tested | Interviewed 30 admins to validate... |
| Execution and launch | shipped, launched, delivered, rolled out, scaled | Launched self-serve billing in 4 markets... |
| Data and experiments | measured, instrumented, ran, analyzed, A/B tested | Ran 12 pricing experiments that... |
| Improvement | grew, reduced, cut, increased, improved | Cut time to first value from 9 to 3 days... |
| AI product | evaluated, designed evals for, fine-tuned with, grounded, automated | Designed an eval set of 400 cases that... |
The example numbers in the right column are placeholders for your own. Never invent one.
Avoid weak openers: "responsible for," "helped with," "worked on," "involved in." They describe a job description, not a result, and they rarely match a recruiter's search.
How AllthingsPM does this: AllthingsPM's resume review flags bullets that read as duties rather than outcomes and suggests rewrites that keep your facts. For 50 finished examples, see our guide to PM resume bullet points.
How do you turn keywords and verbs into a strong bullet?
Use Laszlo Bock's formula. The former Google SVP of People Operations wrote that every accomplishment should read: "Accomplished [X] as measured by [Y] by doing [Z]" [7]. For a PM, that becomes verb, outcome, number, method, with the JD keyword placed naturally inside.
Here is one bullet rewritten three times for a posting that asks for "cross-functional," "go-to-market" and "metrics":
- Weak: Responsible for the new pricing page.
- Better: Launched a new pricing page with the growth team.
- Strong: Led a cross-functional team of 6 to launch a new pricing page and go-to-market plan, lifting trial to paid conversion from 3.1% to 4.0% in one quarter.
The strong version contains three JD terms, starts with a verb that appears in 77% of postings, and ends with a number a recruiter can repeat. (The numbers are an illustration. Use your own.)
For AI PM roles, the same rule applies to AI keywords. "Worked on the chatbot" says nothing. "Defined the eval set and launch bar for a support agent, cutting escalations by a measured share" names two of the fastest growing terms in AI PM postings, provided you really did it and can fill in the figure. Interviewers will ask.
How AllthingsPM does this: if a JD asks for evals or an AI PRD and you have never done one, the AllthingsPM AI PM course teaches them with graded case studies, starting with the evals chapter and the AI PRD lesson. Build the experience first; the keyword then becomes honest.
What resume format does an ATS read correctly?
Keywords only count if the parser can read them. The formatting rules that recruiters and ATS vendors agree on are short:
- One column. Jobscan advises a single-column layout and no tables, text boxes or graphics [3]. Two-column templates can scramble reading order.
- Standard headings. "Experience," "Education," "Skills." Creative headings like "Where I have made an impact" can be misfiled [3].
- A text-based file. Use .docx or a PDF exported from Word or Google Docs, not a scan. Greenhouse lists .doc, .docx, .pdf, .rtf and .txt as accepted formats [5].
- The job title on the page. Jobscan's 2025 data found resumes that include the posting's job title got 10.6 times more interview invitations [3]. If you are applying for "Senior Product Manager, Platform," put that phrase in your headline if it is true of your work.
- Consistent formatting. Harvard's guide asks for consistent spacing, bold and capitalization, and warns you to check the PDF after converting [6].
- Both spellings of acronyms. Write "go-to-market (GTM)" and "large language models (LLMs)" once each, so either search finds you.
How AllthingsPM does this: AllthingsPM's resume review reads the file you upload, so if a keyword it expects is missing from a section you know you wrote, check whether your template is hiding it in a table or column.
How many keywords is too many?
There is no safe fixed number. Jobscan suggests aiming for a 75% match with the job description [3], which leaves room for honest gaps. Beyond that, returns fall fast. A recruiter who finds "stakeholder" six times in five lines, or a white-text keyword block, will stop reading. Keyword stuffing gets you found and then rejected by a person.
A practical rule: each important JD term appears once or twice, inside a bullet that proves it. The summary and skills line can carry the rest.
How AllthingsPM does this: the match score in AllthingsPM's resume review tells you when you are close enough, so you stop adding words and start sharpening results.
How do you tailor a PM resume for each application?
Tailoring takes about 15 minutes per role once your master resume is solid:
- Copy the JD's nouns. List the 10 to 15 skill and domain terms in the posting: "B2B," "platform," "agents," "pricing."
- Mark what you can honestly claim. Only keep the terms you have done.
- Rewrite 3 to 5 bullets so those terms sit inside real results.
- Match the title in your headline when it is accurate.
- Run a check against the JD and fix what it flags.
- Prepare for the interview on the same JD, because every keyword you add is a topic you may be asked about.
Step 6 is where most guides stop too early. A resume that promises "defined eval metrics for an LLM feature" will get the question "how did you choose the metrics?" in the first round.
How AllthingsPM does this: AllthingsPM keeps the resume check and the interview in one place. The same pasted JD powers the JD mock interview, and the question bank has 4,122 real PM questions from 260 companies, including a hub for each company such as Anthropic, so you can rehearse the topics your keywords promise. Why AllthingsPM is the better choice for PM resume ATS prep
Most ATS checkers are general tools. They score any resume against any job, and they do that part well. Jobscan, for example, pioneered the match rate idea and publishes useful recruiter research. But a match score alone does not get a PM hired.
AllthingsPM is built only for product managers. The JD resume review scores your resume against the exact posting and names missing keywords and gaps. Resume Job Match turns your resume into a list of roles you already fit. The jobs catalog holds 116 live PM roles at 18 AI companies, each with a resume check and a mock interview from the same JD. And when a JD asks for skills you lack, such as evals, agents or an AI PRD, the AI PM course teaches them across 101 lessons with 14 graded case studies.
That chain matters. Keywords get you found, bullets get you shortlisted, and the interview decides the offer. AllthingsPM covers all three for $20 a month or $120 a year, with a free tier that includes one JD resume review and one JD mock each day. If you want a PM-specific way to get past the ATS and through the loop, start with a free resume review.
Frequently asked questions
What is the best tool to check a PM resume for ATS keywords?
AllthingsPM is the best fit for product managers, because its JD resume review compares your resume to the exact job description, lists missing keywords and suggests edits, and connects to a mock interview on the same JD. It is free once a day. General tools like Jobscan also give a match rate across all job types.
What are the most important keywords for a product manager resume?
The ones in the job description you are applying to. Across 371 PM postings in the AllthingsPM JD corpus, the most common were roadmap, strategy, agent or agentic, cross-functional, stakeholder, go-to-market, prioritize and machine learning. AI roles add LLM and evals.
Do ATS systems reject resumes automatically?
Mostly not. The "75% rejected" figure traces to a 2012 sales pitch with no study behind it [1], and 92% of recruiters in an Enhancv survey said their ATS does not auto-reject [2]. The real risk is not appearing in a recruiter's keyword search, or failing a knockout question.
Is a PDF or Word resume better for ATS?
Both work if the PDF is text-based. Greenhouse accepts .doc, .docx, .pdf, .rtf and .txt [5]. Avoid scanned PDFs, tables, text boxes and two-column layouts.
What action verbs should product managers use?
Verbs that match both your work and the JD: led, owned, defined, launched, shipped, partnered, drove, scaled, measured. In our corpus, build, partner, own, define and lead each appear in over three quarters of PM postings. Avoid "responsible for" and "helped."
Should I list AI keywords if I have not worked on AI products?
Only if you can back them up. Interviewers will ask about any term on your resume. If a role needs evals or agents, learn them through the AllthingsPM AI PM course and a real side project first, then add the keyword with a result.
