What this question tests
Prioritization for a zero to one product: can you pick the smallest set of features that actually solves the gift finding problem instead of listing everything.
How to approach it
- Define the user and their real pain point: people who know they need a gift but struggle to translate a relationship and occasion into a specific idea.
- Rank candidate features by how directly they solve that: a guided quiz capturing relationship, occasion, budget, and interests ranks above a broad catalog browse.
- Prioritize the recommendation engine and a curated, limited catalog first, since a huge unfiltered catalog recreates the exact overwhelm the product should solve.
- Deprioritize secondary features for launch, like gift wrapping options or social sharing of gift lists, since they add polish but not core value.
- State the MVP: a short quiz, a ranked list of five to ten suggestions, and one click purchase or gift card fallback if nothing fits.
- Define success as completion rate of the quiz to purchase funnel.
What a strong answer includes
- Justifies the ranking with a clear logic, solving overwhelm, rather than listing five features with equal weight.
- Explicitly cuts scope for launch, naming what is deprioritized and why.
- Picks a funnel completion metric that reflects whether the recommendation actually worked, not just traffic.
Common mistakes
- Listing every possible feature (reviews, wish lists, social sharing) without prioritizing.
- No fallback for when the recommendation engine has no confident answer for a user.
