What this question tests

Tests open ended product sense: picking a real underserved user need in social media rather than restating Facebook or Instagram.

How to approach it

  1. Pick a specific underserved segment, for example small hobbyist communities poorly served by algorithmic feeds like knitting or amateur astronomy groups.
  2. Identify their core pain: existing platforms bury niche content under general engagement bait and offer weak moderation tools.
  3. Define the core loop: post to a small trusted circle, get feedback, discover adjacent niche communities through shared interest, not follower count.
  4. Sketch the MVP: interest based rooms, chronological feed by default, and lightweight community moderation tools.
  5. Propose a success metric, such as weekly posts per active member in a niche room.
  6. State the assumption you are making about the target audience so the interviewer can redirect if wrong.
