What this question tests
Ability to reason about industry level trends and translate them into strategic implications for a company.
How to approach it
- Identify the major forces at play: real time payment rails, embedded finance, stablecoins, and regulatory scrutiny of big tech payments.
- State a point of view: real time and embedded payments (checkout inside apps) will keep growing fastest.
- Explain why: lower friction at checkout directly increases conversion, which merchants will keep paying for.
- Note the regulatory dimension: increased scrutiny on data use and interchange fees could reshape margins.
- Name likely winners and losers: platforms with embedded distribution win, standalone card networks face margin pressure.
- Tie it back to a company's strategy, for example how a payments company should invest given these shifts.
What a strong answer includes
- Names specific concrete trends, real time rails and embedded checkout, rather than vague statements like 'payments will go digital'.
- Explains the causal mechanism (lower checkout friction drives conversion) rather than just asserting a trend will happen.
- Gives an illustrative number, e.g. assumes embedded checkout could cut cart abandonment by 10 to 15 percent.
- Connects the trend analysis to an actionable recommendation for a specific company, not just abstract commentary.
Common mistakes
- Giving vague, textbook trends with no mechanism or evidence behind them.
- Not connecting the analysis back to a concrete company or product decision.
- Ignoring regulatory risk, which materially affects payments strategy.
Likely follow-up questions
- Which company is best positioned for this shift and why?
