What this question tests
Product design for a trust-sensitive feature in a specific, perishable product category with real logistics constraints.
How to approach it
- Clarify the goal: reduce return friction for quality-sensitive produce or build purchase confidence for first time buyers.
- Identify the core user pain point, customers cannot inspect ripeness or freshness before buying online.
- Define the flow: customer orders, receives the item, has a short window to reject or request a refund without a full return shipment.
- Address operational constraints, produce cannot be resold once returned, so the model must be refund or credit based, not physical return.
- Propose the mechanism, e.g. a photo based quality claim within 24 hours triggers an instant refund or replacement credit.
- Define success metrics, such as reduced return related complaints and higher repeat purchase rate for produce categories.
What a strong answer includes
- Recognizes that physical return of produce is impractical, so the design must be a no-return refund or credit model.
- Uses a lightweight verification step, a photo of the item, to prevent abuse while keeping friction low.
- Ties the feature to a business metric, repeat purchase rate in the produce category, not just satisfaction.
- Considers fraud risk and proposes a cap, e.g. limiting the number of free claims per customer per month, as an assumption.
Common mistakes
- Proposing a literal physical return process for perishable goods.
- Ignoring fraud or abuse risk in a photo based refund claim.
- Not tying the feature back to a measurable business outcome.
Likely follow-up questions
- How would you prevent abuse of this feature.
- What metrics would tell you this feature is working.
- How would this differ for a $2 item versus a $20 item.
