What this question tests
Product sense combined with metrics thinking, improving a mature feed and defining how to measure the change.
How to approach it
- Clarify the goal: are we optimizing for time spent, content diversity, or creator health, since these can conflict.
- Segment users, e.g. lurkers, casual posters, and heavy creators, since a feed change affects each differently.
- Identify a specific pain point, such as feed fatigue from too much reshared or ad content crowding original posts.
- Propose one focused change, e.g. a dedicated close friends row or better ranking signals for underexposed original content.
- Define a primary success metric, such as daily time spent by casual users or original post engagement rate.
- Set a guardrail metric, such as ad load tolerance or creator posting frequency, to catch negative side effects.
What a strong answer includes
- Picks one specific improvement rather than a vague list, e.g. reducing ad density in the first ten posts.
- Separates the north star metric, like DAU/MAU ratio, from guardrails like session length or reported spam.
- Gives an illustrative number, e.g. targeting a 3 percent lift in day 7 retention, clearly marked as an assumption.
- Explains why the metric was chosen, tying it back to the specific user segment and pain point identified.
Common mistakes
- Proposing many small tweaks without picking one to go deep on.
- Choosing a vanity metric like total likes instead of a retention or satisfaction proxy.
- Not considering unintended effects on creators or ad revenue.
Likely follow-up questions
- How would you A/B test this change.
- What would you do if engagement went up but time spent went down.
- How would this affect creators differently from casual viewers.
