What this question tests
Tests building a metric framework for a massive, multi-sided platform where creators, viewers, and advertisers all need distinct, well-chosen metrics.
How to approach it
- Clarify the platform's three sides: viewers (consumption), creators (content supply), and advertisers (monetization), since success needs to be defined for each.
- Set a viewer metric: watch time per session and session frequency, since these best reflect whether recommendations and content quality are working.
- Set a creator-supply metric: number of active uploading channels and average views-per-upload trend, since creator retention is what sustains the content pipeline long-term.
- Set a monetization metric: ad revenue per 1,000 views (RPM) and advertiser retention, since advertiser trust in brand safety directly funds the whole ecosystem.
- Add a guardrail: policy-violating content removal rate and time-to-removal, since content-safety failures risk both advertiser trust and regulatory scrutiny at this scale.
What a strong answer includes
- Structures metrics across all three real sides of YouTube's ecosystem instead of a single flat 'watch time' answer.
- Picks watch time over view count specifically, reflecting YouTube's own publicly known internal shift away from raw view-count optimization years ago.
- Uses an illustrative number, e.g. assume creator channel churn is currently 10% annually, and frames a healthy creator-supply target around reducing that.
- Adds a content-safety guardrail explicitly, recognizing YouTube's real, well-documented brand-safety and moderation challenges at scale.
Common mistakes
- Picking a single metric (like total views) without addressing YouTube's genuinely multi-sided ecosystem.
- Ignoring advertiser trust and brand safety, which is a critical, well-documented real business risk for YouTube specifically.
Likely follow-up questions
- How would you weigh watch time against content diversity, since pure watch-time optimization can favor a few dominant creators?
- How would you measure creator health separately for small versus large channels?
