What this question tests
Product design grounded in a personal pain point, translating an anecdotal complaint into a scoped, buildable solution.
How to approach it
- Clarify the specific pain, lost or delayed luggage, long check-in lines, or uncertainty about bag status during a trip.
- Segment travelers, frequent business travelers who value speed versus occasional leisure travelers who value reassurance.
- Prioritize the biggest pain point, likely uncertainty and lack of real-time visibility into where a checked bag is.
- Propose a solution, a real-time bag tracking feature using shared location tags, integrated with airline check-in data and proactive delay alerts.
- Consider a self-service option, e.g. pre-printing tags or remote check-in to skip the counter line entirely.
- Define success metrics, reduction in reported lost or delayed bag incidents and traveler-reported anxiety or satisfaction score.
What a strong answer includes
- Grounds the answer in the specific complaint stated, luggage check-in challenges, rather than solving all of travel broadly.
- Proposes a concrete tracking mechanism, integrating with existing tag technology and airline systems, not a vague 'better tracking' claim.
- Separates the line-avoidance problem, solved by remote check-in, from the visibility problem, solved by real-time tracking, as two distinct fixes.
- Sets a measurable outcome tied to the original complaint, reduced anxiety or fewer lost bag incidents.
Common mistakes
- Solving a different problem than the one stated, e.g. focusing on flight booking instead of luggage.
- Proposing a solution requiring airline or airport infrastructure changes with no acknowledgment of that dependency.
- Not defining any way to measure whether the anxiety or friction was reduced.
Likely follow-up questions
- How would you get airlines to integrate with this feature.
- What would you do for travelers without a smartphone.
- How would you measure whether this reduced traveler anxiety.
