What this question tests

Tests self-awareness about failure, specifically whether the candidate takes ownership rather than blaming others.

Situation: briefly set up what the product was and its goal.
Task: your specific responsibility in the launch or decision.
Action: what you did, and be honest about the misjudgment, a wrong assumption, a missed signal, or poor timing.
Result: state the actual failure metric, adoption below target or a sunset after N months, and the concrete lesson applied afterward.
Show the lesson was applied in a later project, not just stated abstractly.

Owns the mistake directly, naming the specific misjudgment, rather than blaming engineering or market conditions.
Names a specific, checkable lesson, for example validating willingness to pay before building, and a later instance where it was applied.
Balances honesty about the failure with a clear demonstration of growth.

Deflecting blame onto the team, market or leadership instead of owning the decision.
Picking a failure that isn't really a failure, a humble-brag in disguise.
