What this question tests

Whether the candidate has real experience earning trust from technical, skeptical users rather than just shipping features at them.

Situation: name the community, its size, and why it mattered to the business, for example open-source LangChain contributors or a plugin ecosystem.
Task: state the specific goal, such as raising weekly active contributors or getting a breaking API change adopted without backlash.
Action: describe how you gathered input, for example RFCs, GitHub discussions or office hours, before writing code.
Action: explain how you balanced maintainer velocity against community goodwill when the two conflicted.
Result: give a concrete outcome, like contributor count, issue resolution time or adoption rate of the change.
Reflection: what you would do differently, especially around communication timing.

Shows the candidate shipped something visible to the community, not just internal tooling, and can describe pushback they absorbed.
Cites a specific mechanism used to build trust, such as an RFC process, public roadmap, or maintainer office hours.
Gives a real number: contributors gained, PR merge time reduced, or churn among top contributors avoided.
Names a tradeoff explicitly, like slowing a release to get community sign-off first.
