What this question tests
Problem solving process when the obvious lever, execution quality, is not the issue, testing whether the candidate looks upstream.
How to approach it
- State the first move: verify the diagnosis, confirming execution really is high quality and growth truly is flat.
- Investigate market level explanations: check if the addressable market is saturated or a new competitor is capturing demand.
- Investigate funnel level explanations: look at acquisition, activation and retention separately.
- Talk to churned or non converting users directly to test whether the product solves a strong enough problem.
- Decide, based on findings, whether the fix is positioning, a new segment, or a product pivot, not more polish.
What a strong answer includes
- Separates execution quality from is the product solving a valuable enough problem, a distinction many miss.
- Breaks the funnel apart instead of treating growth as one number to push.
- Grounds the diagnosis in direct user research, not just dashboard analysis.
Common mistakes
- Assuming more marketing spend fixes flat growth without diagnosing the actual funnel stage that is broken.
- Treating high quality execution as proof the product itself is right.
Likely follow-up questions
- What would you do if acquisition and activation were fine but retention was the problem?
- How would you know when to pivot versus keep iterating?
