What this question tests
Tests platform PM thinking: prioritizing developer facing tooling investments by their effect on build quality and reliability, not end user features.
How to approach it
- Define the developer as the customer: AR/VR studios and solo creators building on Horizon or Quest, not consumers.
- Map their build pipeline: asset creation, SDK integration, on device testing, performance profiling, and store submission.
- Identify the biggest friction points, likely slow iteration loops, inconsistent performance across headset hardware, and thin crash or frame rate telemetry.
- Prioritize fixes using reach across active developers times the time saved per build cycle.
- Propose concrete tools: a performance profiler with frame budget alerts, a device farm for cross hardware testing, and better crash reporting.
- Confirm with the interviewer whether the focus is Quest hardware only or also web based WebXR.
What a strong answer includes
- Names a specific pain point, long iterate to test cycles on physical Quest headsets, and proposes a cloud device farm to cut that cycle from minutes to seconds.
- Proposes a standardized performance budget dashboard so developers see frame rate and thermal throttling risk before submission, cutting store rejections.
- Suggests tiered SDK support, so smaller studios get templated starter kits while larger studios get lower level access.
- Sets a success metric: reduce average crash rate per session by a stated amount, for example 30 percent, within two quarters.
Common mistakes
- Designing for end users of AR/VR apps instead of the developers who build them.
- Proposing generic SDK improvements without naming what actually breaks performance or reliability today.
Likely follow-up questions
- How would you prioritize between a new SDK feature and fixing an existing reliability bug?
- What metric would tell you the platform tools are actually working?
