What this question tests
Whether the candidate can reason about a platform's health beyond a single ratio, weighing supply and demand sides of a content marketplace.
How to approach it
- State the assumption: a 80/20 consume to create ratio is normal for most content platforms, so ask what baseline TikTok is being compared against.
- Separate the question into two: is creator supply sufficient, and is consumption itself healthy (watch time, completion rate, diversity of feed).
- Check whether the 20 percent of creators produce enough volume and variety to keep the algorithm serving fresh content to viewers.
- Identify the real risk: if creator supply growth stalls, content freshness and retention degrade even if consumption looks fine today.
- Recommend action only if supply-side signals (upload frequency, new creator retention) are weakening, not because the ratio itself looks low.
What a strong answer includes
- Reframes the question: a healthy creator economy needs far fewer creators than consumers, so 80/20 is not automatically a problem.
- Cites a concrete signal to watch instead, such as month over month new creator retention or average uploads per active creator.
- Distinguishes casual creation (duets, stitches, comments) from original content, since lowering the bar to create may matter more than raising the ratio.
Common mistakes
- Assuming more creators is always better without checking if supply is actually constrained.
- Proposing broad incentives to create without segmenting which creator tier is underrepresented.
Likely follow-up questions
- What metric would tell you creator supply is becoming a bottleneck?
- Would you invest in lowering the barrier to create, or in retaining existing creators?
