Behavioral question

Your sales team has just reached out to you with a $100M deal where your product has a missing capability that is a deal stopper. Your Engineering Team is already busy working with another key feature for the rest of the year. How would you prioritize these requests?

What this question tests

How the candidate prioritizes under real commercial pressure, using a structured story about trading off a big deal against a committed roadmap.

How to approach it

  1. Set up the situation: the deal size, the missing capability, and what engineering is already committed to.
  2. State the task: decide whether and how to reprioritize without derailing the other commitment.
  3. Describe the action: quantify the deal's value against the cost of delay, and loop in sales, engineering leads and the exec sponsor.
  4. Show a structured decision, such as scoping a minimum version of the missing capability instead of the full ask.
  5. Give the result: whether the deal closed and the actual impact on the delayed feature's timeline.
  6. Note what you would confirm if hypothetical: deal terms, engineering capacity, and reversibility of the other commitment.
