How do you prioritize among competing features?

What this question tests

Behavioral/process fit: can you describe a concrete, repeatable prioritization framework and apply it to a real example.

State your framework upfront: e.g. weighing user impact, business impact, effort, and strategic alignment, or a lightweight scoring model like RICE.
Give a specific example: describe two or three real competing features you had to choose between.
Explain how you gathered input: data (usage, revenue potential) and stakeholder perspectives (engineering effort, sales urgency).
Describe the actual tradeoff and decision: which feature won, and why, including what you deprioritized and the pushback you managed.
Mention how you communicated the decision to those whose feature didn't get prioritized, since that's often the harder part.
Close with the outcome: what happened after shipping the prioritized feature.

Names a specific, repeatable framework (e.g. RICE, impact/effort) rather than saying 'it depends' with no structure.
Uses a real example with actual competing features and stakeholders, not a hypothetical.
Shows how disagreement was handled, e.g. convincing a stakeholder whose feature was deprioritized, not just the analytical part.
Closes with a measurable outcome from the choice made.

Giving only an abstract framework with no concrete example applied to it.
Skipping how they handled stakeholder pushback, which is often what the interviewer is really probing for.
