What this question tests

Whether the candidate can handle an extreme, unconstrained prompt by imposing structure and picking a defensible, narrow scope.

How to approach it

  1. Reframe the prompt into a concrete scope, for example designing the life-support and habitat systems for the first 100 colonists, not the whole colony at once.
  2. Identify the users: the colonists themselves, split into roles such as researchers, engineers, and medical staff, each with different daily needs.
  3. Prioritize by survival first, then sustainability: air, water, food, radiation shielding, before amenities like recreation or private space.
  4. Propose a phased build: a sealed habitat module first, then closed-loop agriculture, then expansion modules, describing tradeoffs at each phase.
  5. Define success as sustained survival metrics (days of consumable reserve, system uptime) rather than colonist satisfaction alone at first.
