What this question tests

Tests product sense and genuine curiosity by seeing whether you can analyze a product you love with structure, not just enthusiasm.

Pick a product you can speak to with real detail, ideally one relevant to the interviewing company's space, and say why upfront.
Identify the core user problem the product solves and why it solves it better than alternatives you've tried.
Point to a specific design or product decision, like an onboarding flow or a default setting, that you think is exceptional.
Name one thing you'd still improve, which shows critical thinking rather than pure fandom.
Tie the answer back to what it says about your product taste and what you'd bring to this role.

Picks a product with a concrete, well-explained reason, not just 'I use it every day', showing product judgment.
Calls out a specific mechanic, e.g. Spotify's Discover Weekly using collaborative filtering to keep recommendations fresh without user effort.
Balances praise with a genuine critique, showing you evaluate products rather than just consume them.
Connects the choice to the interviewing company's domain when relevant, showing preparation without being forced.

Naming a product with no specific reasoning, e.g. 'I like Instagram because it's fun'.
Praising only, with no critique, which reads as a lack of critical product thinking.
