What this question tests
AI/technical product thinking: defining the system architecture, data inputs, and quality measurement for a generative personalization feature.
How to approach it
- Define the input signals needed: a user's viewing history, genre preferences, and which specific moments of a title they've historically engaged with (via existing thumbnail personalization data as a proxy).
- Define the generation pipeline: select scenes likely to resonate with that user's taste profile, then use generative video/editing models to assemble a short, personalized trailer from those scenes.
- Address quality control: require human or automated review to prevent spoilers, tonal mismatches, or generating misleading clips not representative of the title.
- Define the evaluation metric for quality: click-through rate from the personalized trailer to a play, and completion rate of the resulting watch, versus a standard trailer control group.
- Address a guardrail: viewer trust, ensuring the generated trailer doesn't overpromise or misrepresent the actual content, since trust erosion would hurt engagement long-term.
What a strong answer includes
- Grounds personalization in signals Netflix genuinely has, viewing history and existing thumbnail-personalization data, not invented data sources.
- Explicitly addresses the generative-content quality-control problem, spoilers and misrepresentation, a real risk specific to this feature.
- Defines an A/B-testable success metric, click-through and completion versus a standard trailer, not just 'personalization is better.'
Common mistakes
- Describing the AI generation mechanism in detail while skipping quality control, the biggest real risk with generative content at scale.
- No control-group comparison against standard trailers, making it impossible to prove the personalized version actually works better.
Likely follow-up questions
- How would you prevent generated trailers from including spoilers?
- How would you handle titles with too little viewing data to personalize confidently?
