What this question tests

Behavioral interviewing: whether the candidate can tell a structured, specific story about navigating competing priorities under real constraints.

Pick one real project with genuine competing priorities, not a hypothetical, and state the situation and stakes briefly.
State the task: what decision or tradeoff you personally owned, such as choosing between a revenue feature and a technical debt fix.
Describe the action: how you gathered input, what framework or data you used (for example impact versus effort) to decide.
Explain how you communicated the decision to stakeholders who did not get their feature prioritized.
State the result with a number where possible, such as the shipped feature's adoption or revenue impact.
Close with what you would do differently, showing reflection rather than just a win story.

Uses a specific framework (reach, impact, confidence, effort or similar) rather than saying decisions were made by gut feeling.
Names the losing stakeholder and how you kept their trust despite not building their request.
Quantifies the result, for example a feature that lifted a conversion metric by an assumed 8 percent, rather than a vague success claim.

Telling a story where the prioritization tradeoff is vague or invented on the spot.
Skipping how disagreement was handled, which is usually what the interviewer is probing for.

What would you have done differently with the benefit of hindsight?
