What this question tests
Stakeholder management skill, tailoring communication style to different audiences on a real project.
How to approach it
- Situation: describe a project with distinct stakeholder types, such as engineering, sales, and executive leadership.
- Task: explain the different information each group needed, for example engineers wanted technical tradeoffs, executives wanted business impact.
- Action: describe tailoring format and depth per audience, such as a one pager for executives versus a detailed spec for engineers.
- Action: describe a regular cadence, such as a weekly async update, that kept everyone aligned without excessive meetings.
- Action: describe how you handled a moment of disagreement or confusion between stakeholder groups.
- Result: state what made this effective, such as faster decisions or fewer surprises at launch, with a specific outcome.
What a strong answer includes
- Shows genuinely different communication approaches per audience, not the same message delivered to everyone.
- Uses a specific example of tailoring, such as translating a technical tradeoff into a business impact statement for executives.
- Names a concrete mechanism, a weekly async update or a shared decision log, rather than a vague 'I communicated often'.
- Ends with a specific, measurable result, such as reduced last minute scope changes or faster sign off time.
Common mistakes
- Describing the same communication style for every stakeholder group, missing the point of the question.
- Giving a vague answer with no concrete project or mechanism named.
- No measurable result tied to the improved communication.
Likely follow-up questions
- What would you do differently next time?
- How did you handle a stakeholder who disagreed with your priorities?
- How do you decide how much detail to share with executives?
