Open with the core of the job: spending most of the day aligning people (engineering, design, stakeholders) around what to build and why.
Walk through a realistic day: morning stand-up and triage of bugs or blockers, then a stretch of writing specs or reviewing designs, then stakeholder syncs.
Include the less glamorous parts: reading support tickets or data dashboards to spot problems, and writing follow-up docs after meetings.
Mention prioritization work: saying no to most requests and explaining why, which is a daily, not occasional, activity.
Close with the mindset: acting as the person who connects user needs, business goals, and technical constraints into one plan.

Uses a concrete, believable daily rhythm (stand-up, spec review, 1:1s, data check) instead of an abstract list of PM responsibilities.
Names specific artifacts a PM actually produces day to day, like a one-pager, a prioritized backlog, or a post-launch metrics review.
Is honest about the unglamorous parts, like chasing status updates or rewriting a doc after pushback, which reads as authentic over rehearsed.
Keeps the language plain since the question explicitly asks for layman's terms, avoiding jargon like 'north star metric' without explanation.

Reciting a generic 'PM is the CEO of the product' line instead of describing an actual day.
Listing only strategic work and skipping the routine coordination and communication that fills most of the day.
