A forward deployed product manager (FDPM) is a product manager embedded with a small number of large customers who owns getting an AI product into production inside each one and decides which of their requests become part of the core product. Scale AI puts it in one line: the role "is not a roadmap PM, a CSM, or a solutions engineer." OpenAI calls its version a Deployed Product Manager, "the product counterpart to Deployment Engineers." Posted base pay in the roles we read runs from $130k (Cresta, associate) to $345k (Scale AI, public sector), and most want 5 to 7 years of experience.
AllthingsPM is an AI PM course and PM interview prep platform, and it is the fastest way we know to prep for this role: four real FDPM postings in our jobs catalog each have a mock interview built from their exact text, and our question bank holds 4,122 real questions with answer guides, including forward deployed ones. The data below comes from those postings and company boards, read in full.
What does a forward deployed product manager actually do?
Five loops repeat for every account.
- Scope before code. Abridge asks its FDPM to "run discovery on-site at our partner accounts" and "define success before any code is written."
- Get it to production. Scale AI: "Drive deployments from contract to production... You know what 'production-ready' actually means and you close the gap."
- Build alongside engineers. Cresta's FDPM will "design, build, test and iterate on AI agents in partnership with FDEs"; its associate role owns "evaluations and A/B tests of AI Agents."
- Decide what generalises. Abridge: "Decide what gets built, what gets declined, and what gets routed to the core roadmap."
- Feed the platform. Intercom asks for "evidence-backed input, not just feature requests."
The fourth loop is what makes this product management and not consulting. Scale AI says the best FDPMs "can tell the difference between a customer's stated request, their actual problem, and what the platform should do."
A worked example: a hospital asks for a custom export button. The stated request is the button. The actual problem is that clinicians retype notes into a second system. The platform answer might be a reusable integration every health system can use. An FDPM who ships the button has done services work; one who ships the integration has done product work.
How AllthingsPM does this: our course lesson From pilot to production walks through exactly this loop from the FDPM's seat, and the question bank has real bespoke-versus-core questions you can answer and compare with an answer guide.
Which companies hire forward deployed PMs, and what do they pay?
These are the roles we could read in full in September 2026. The four linked to AllthingsPM have a mock interview attached; the rest were checked on the company's own board.
| Company | Role | Base salary | Experience asked | Notable requirement |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Scale AI | FDPM, Enterprise (New York) | $240k to $300k | 6+ years | Shipped into large orgs, "not pilots" |
| Scale AI | FDPM, Public Sector (NY, DC) | $210k to $345k | 6+ years | Active Top Secret clearance |
| Scale AI | FDPM, Enterprise (London) | Not posted | 4+ years building ML products | Some Python |
| Abridge | Forward Deployed Product Manager (SF) | $260k to $290k + equity | 7+ years | Leads a pod; about 20% travel |
| OpenAI | Deployed Product Manager, Codex (SF, closed) | $180k to $290k + equity | Not stated | Product counterpart to Deployment Engineers |
| Cresta | FDPM, AI Agent (US remote) | $170k to $280k + equity | 5+ years | Owns agent outcomes and metrics |
| Cresta | Associate FDPM (US remote) | $130k to $170k + equity | 2+ years | Prompt engineering, evals, A/B tests |
| Intercom (Fin) | Senior FDPM (SF) | $199.8k to $222k | "No minimum years required" | Pitches, demos and configures Fin |
Base pay as posted, checked September 2026. Scale AI notes its range "may be inclusive of several career levels."
How AllthingsPM does this: every linked role above lives in our jobs catalog with a Start a mock interview button, so you can go from reading the salary to rehearsing that company's loop in one click. Upload a resume to Resume Job Match and we rank which of these roles fit you.
What is OpenAI's version of the role?
OpenAI's Deployed Product Manager, Codex was posted 1 May 2026 at $180k to $290k plus equity and is closed. It would "act as product lead within strategic customer accounts."
On 26 September 2026, OpenAI's Ashby board listed 22 "Forward Deployed" roles, all engineering, and no PM role. Watch the board, and meanwhile read what OpenAI looks for in a PM (12 OpenAI PM postings in our catalog) and the OpenAI product manager interview guide.
How is it different from a normal PM?
| Forward deployed PM | Core product PM | Solutions engineer or CSM | |
|---|---|---|---|
| Serves | A few accounts, deeply | Many customers through one roadmap | One account, pre or post sale |
| Main signal | Sitting inside the deployment | Analytics, research, sales feedback | Customer requests |
| Owns | The customer outcome and what generalises | Roadmap for a product area | The technical sale or the renewal |
| Says no to | Bespoke work that will not generalise | Features off strategy | Rarely; the job is to unblock |
Intercom draws the line itself: "It's product management at its core, not solutions engineering, customer success, or professional services." One PM on r/ProductManagement warns it can become "more delivery and short-term focused," so ask how many field learnings reached the core roadmap.
How AllthingsPM does this: interviewers probe this boundary directly. Our JD mock reads the posting you paste, so a Scale AI mock asks Scale AI style scoping questions, not generic roadmap ones, and it follows up when your answer drifts into customer success territory.
What skills do the job descriptions ask for?
We grouped every requirement across the postings. Six recur.
- Production deployment in big organisations. Scale AI wants someone who "can name the customer, the scale, the integration, and what production actually looked like."
- Executive trust. Abridge's FDPM works "in front of CMOs, CMIOs, CIOs, and CFOs."
- Technical fluency, not deep coding. Scale AI: "enough to hold a real conversation with a platform engineer about architectural tradeoffs."
- Agent building and evals. Cresta's associate owns prompt and context engineering and evals; Scale AI prefers "model evaluation pipelines." Start with AI evals for product managers and the course lesson on evaluating an agent, not an answer.
- Scoping and saying no. Scale AI: "can say no credibly and explain why."
- Ambiguity and ownership. Scale AI: "creates structure where there is none."
A quick self-check you can run today: for each of the six skills, write one story with a customer, a scale, an integration and a production result. Any skill without a story is your prep gap.
How AllthingsPM does this: the AI PM course covers the technical side (evals, agents, MCP) in PM terms, and the JD resume review scores your bullets against the exact requirements of the FDPM posting you target.

How do you become a forward deployed PM?
The postings name the feeder roles: "consulting, field PM, solutions engineering with ownership" (Scale AI), "Technology Consulting, Implementations, Product, or Customer Success" (Cresta), and founders (OpenAI, Cresta).
- From core PM: add a story where you owned an enterprise rollout end to end. Our AI PM course, built from 604 real PM job postings, has a whole chapter on this: Ship it into somebody else's company, including the lesson From pilot to production, written about the FDPM at the customer.
- From solutions engineering, consulting or founding: add evidence of product decisions, such as turning three customers' custom asks into one reusable feature, or the live system you shipped.
Whatever the route, build something agentic yourself; the lesson on connecting an agent to one tool with MCP gets you there. Then rewrite every resume bullet to pass Scale AI's test (customer, scale, integration, production) and run it through a resume review against the specific JD, or let Resume Job Match find which deployment roles fit you.
What do forward deployed PM interviews ask, and how should you prep?
The interview tests the job's judgment calls: scope under pressure, bespoke versus core, and metrics that prove a deployment worked. Our question bank has 4,122 real questions from 260 companies, each with its own page and answer guide, including forward deployed ones:
- Two weeks into a six-week engagement, the partner wants more scope, engineering hits a blocker and executives want a go-live date. What do you do?
- What metrics would you use to judge whether a forward-deployed engagement succeeded for both the health system and Abridge?
The company hubs collect more: Scale AI, Abridge and OpenAI.
A 5-day FDPM prep plan inside AllthingsPM
- Day 1: pick a posting in the jobs catalog and run a free mock interview from it to find your baseline.
- Day 2: read the From pilot to production lesson and draft two deployment stories.
- Day 3: answer the two forward deployed questions above out loud, then compare with the answer guides.
- Day 4: run your resume through the JD resume review and rewrite weak bullets.
- Day 5: run a second mock from the same posting and compare scores.
Is it a good career move?
Yes, if you want to learn how AI products break in the real world, fast, and enjoy customers, travel (about 20% at Abridge) and deadlines you do not control. It is weaker if you want long-horizon ownership of one product area. Abridge is hiring "founding" FDPMs, so early hires help write the playbook.
Why AllthingsPM is the better choice for forward deployed PM prep
Your goal is to walk into an FDPM loop ready for its specific judgment calls: bespoke versus core, re-scoping under executive pressure, proving a deployment worked. Books and blogs cannot interview you, and generic AI chat has no real FDPM questions or answer guides. Books and blogs give useful background, generic AI chat is flexible, and coaches give valuable human feedback, priced per session. AllthingsPM is the only tool we found that combines mocks built from any job description with an AI PM course, a real question bank and live AI-company JDs: one place instead of five.
| AllthingsPM | Generic AI chat | Books and blogs | Human coach | |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Mock from the exact FDPM posting | Yes, text or voice, scored | Only if you prompt it | No | Yes, per session |
| Real FDPM questions with answer guides | Yes, in a bank of 4,122 | No | Some examples | Depends on coach |
| Course on enterprise deployment | Yes, built from 604 postings | No | Partial | No |
| Live FDPM job descriptions | Yes | No | No | No |
| Price | Free tier, then $20 a month | Varies | Book price | Per session |
The course chapter Ship it into somebody else's company teaches the deployment work, every question bank entry has an answer guide, and you rehearse against the real posting for $20 a month or $120 a year.

What does FDPM stand for?
Forward deployed product manager, the term Scale AI, Cresta, Abridge and Intercom use. OpenAI's closest equivalent was titled Deployed Product Manager.
Does OpenAI hire forward deployed product managers?
OpenAI posted a Deployed Product Manager, Codex role in May 2026 at $180k to $290k base plus equity. It was closed on 26 September 2026, when OpenAI listed 22 forward deployed engineering roles and no forward deployed PM role.
How much does a forward deployed product manager make?
In the US postings we read, base salary ranged from $130k to $170k (Cresta associate) up to $210k to $345k (Scale AI public sector). Most mid to senior roles sat between about $200k and $300k base, usually with equity.
Do forward deployed PMs need to code?
Mostly no, but they need real technical fluency. Scale AI asks for enough to discuss architectural tradeoffs, "not deep coding"; its London posting lists some Python, and Cresta's roles involve prompt engineering and evals.
What is the difference between a forward deployed engineer and a forward deployed PM?
The FDE builds the integrations and the agent at the customer. The FDPM scopes the engagement, owns the outcome and decides what gets built, declined or routed back to the core roadmap.
The FDPM role rewards people who have rehearsed its judgment calls before the loop. Start free on AllthingsPM today: open the Abridge FDPM posting, press Start a mock interview, and see your score in minutes.
