What OpenAI Looks for in a PM: 12 Job Descriptions Analyzed

OpenAI's 12 open product roles (September 2026) want a named domain, safety judgment and research partnership, pay $293K to $490K base plus equity, and never mention SQL or A/B testing. AllthingsPM has a mock interview built from each of the 12 postings.

Twelve postings, sorted into five piles

As of 26 September 2026, OpenAI has 12 product roles in our jobs catalog: 11 titled Product Manager and one Senior Product Policy Lead, all still open on OpenAI's jobs board that day. They fall into five families: safety and integrity (4), developer API (2), enterprise and revenue foundations (2), ChatGPT consumer (2), and models and science (2). Every posting lists a base salary between $293K and $490K plus equity, and every role is based in San Francisco. The postings ask most for a specific domain you already know (12 of 12), safety or trust judgment (12), communication (11) and research partnership (10). They never ask for SQL, Python or A/B testing (0 of 12). AllthingsPM is an AI PM course and PM interview prep platform, and it is the fastest way we know to prepare for exactly these roles, because every one of the 12 postings has its own scored mock interview built from its text, next to 4,122 real PM questions with answer guides and an AI PM course built from 604 job postings.

The practical answer: pick the one team whose domain matches your record, and practise on that posting's own text. That second step is where most prep tools stop short. Generic question banks give you "design a product for X"; the AllthingsPM jobs catalog turns each OpenAI posting into its own scored mock interview, text or voice, with follow-ups. You can start free today.

Chart with AllthingsPM (us) first, mocks for all 12 postings, then range chart of the stated annual base salary for each of OpenAI's 12 product postings, from $293K to $325K for API Agents, Financial Engineering and Multimodal Safety up to $347K to $490K for Core Models and Enterprise Identity

How did we analyse OpenAI's PM job descriptions?

We took every OpenAI posting in the AllthingsPM jobs catalog (read from OpenAI's Ashby board on 22 September 2026), cut the shared company boilerplate, and hand-coded the team and role text for team, location, work model, stated years and 15 requirement themes. On 26 September we checked the live board through Ashby's public API, which carries each posting's pay: 830 open jobs, all 12 of ours still open. We then compared against the 389 PM postings in our latest harvest of AI company job boards (OpenAI's 12, Anthropic's 19, and 358 from 84 others).

We kept the Senior Product Policy Lead because it describes writing "product requirements" and "acceptance criteria". The live board also had one PM role our catalog did not hold that day, Product Manager, Technology Vertical ($266K to $385K). PMs are a tiny share of OpenAI's hiring: 12 PM-titled roles out of 830 jobs is under 1.5 percent. With that few seats, a generic application rarely lands.

How AllthingsPM does this. The same catalog that powered this study is open to you: /jobs holds live PM postings from AI companies, each with the full text, a mock built from it and a resume fit check. We refresh it from company job boards, so the OpenAI roles you see are the ones actually hiring.

Salaries are the "Salary" figure on each live posting. The team families are our grouping, not OpenAI's. API Agents had been on the board since 25 February 2026, seven months when we checked.

How AllthingsPM does this. Click any title above and you land on that role's page, with a "start mock interview" button that turns the posting into questions an OpenAI interviewer would plausibly ask for that team. Nobody else we found links a study like this straight to a practice session per role.

Which OpenAI teams are hiring the most product managers?

Safety and integrity (4). Multimodal Safety covers audio, image and video launches and wants "a proactive, technically skilled product manager adept at adversarial thinking". Safety Measurement "owns OpenAI's approach to measuring harm and safeguard efficacy in production" and will "represent the company's topline safety metric"; it is the only posting to prefer a data science, statistics or economics background. Sensitive Deployments covers "government and other high stakes deployments" and "agentic workflows where harm can unfold across many steps rather than a single prompt". The Policy Lead will "translate external developments into actionable research questions, evaluation needs, product requirements, and policy recommendations." Practise: define one topline safety metric for frontier model deployments.

Developer API (2). API Agents owns "how developers build agentic applications on top of our AI models" and wants a "proven track record of building for developers". API Infrastructure is the plumbing: regional data processing, caching controls, spend limits, audit logs, SSO/SAML and SCIM, usage metering.

Enterprise and revenue foundations (2). Enterprise Identity delivers "SSO, SCIM, and identity federation across all OpenAI products" and asks for "10+ years of product management experience leading large-scale enterprise products". Financial Engineering covers pricing, checkout, payments and subscriptions, wants "prior experience in billing, finance, and accounting", and is the only posting to name a bachelor's degree.

ChatGPT consumer (2). Learning wants to "build ChatGPT into a true learning agent". Youth will "create age specific product experiences for <18 users", and its team text says: "Safety is more important to us than unfettered growth." Practise: design the end-to-end ChatGPT experience for users under 18.

Models and science (2). Core Models is the most technical posting. It asks you to "translate user and product goals into clear model requirements, system architecture choices, and research priorities", build "closed learning loops" from user signals, and "distinguish a useful metric from a convenient one". Rosalind Life Sciences is the only posting to name 0-to-1 work, founder experience and prototyping ("Prototype with Codex, Rosalind Workbench, and GPT-Rosalind to validate ideas with scientists"). Its best line: "You know that a convincing output is not sufficient proof of scientific validity."

How AllthingsPM does this. Each family maps to real practice in our question bank: safety metric questions for the safety team, API design questions for developer roles, under-18 product design for Youth. Every question has its own page and answer guide, so you can see what a strong answer covers before you rehearse it out loud in a mock.

What does an OpenAI product manager get paid?

Each posting shows a base salary range and "Offers Equity". Three things matter.

Equity is on top, and it is large. Levels.fyi showed a self-reported median total compensation of $750,000 a year for OpenAI PMs in the US, against a median base of $310,000, when we checked on 26 September 2026. The sample size is not shown and looks small, so treat it as a hint, not a number to negotiate from.

Years do not set the band. Learning and Youth ask for 10+ years and pay $293K to $385K; Rosalind names no years and pays $347K to $468K. The three highest ceilings (Core Models, Enterprise Identity, Rosalind) go with technical depth and scope.

OpenAI's floor is lower than Anthropic's and its ceiling higher. In our study of 19 Anthropic PM postings, ranges fell between $305,000 and $460,000.

How AllthingsPM does this. With a base range this wide, your level is set by how well you prove scope in the loop. Our JD mock scores each answer and asks follow-ups, so you can practise the scope and depth stories that separate a lower-band offer from a top-band one, before you are in the room.

Where are the roles based, and how senior are they?

All 12 are listed in San Francisco with relocation assistance. Five state a hybrid model of "3 days in the office per week". Only the Senior Product Policy Lead allows remote. None mentions visa sponsorship, so ask the recruiter.

None of the 11 PM titles says Senior, Staff or Principal. Seven name years (one 5+, three 6+, three 10+) and five name none. There is no associate or new-grad PM role; the lowest figure is five years.

Nothing is formally required. None of the 12 has a "minimum qualifications" section; the words "required" and "minimum" appear in none of them. Read the "thrive" list as the bar the team hopes for, and put your strongest matching evidence at the top of your resume.

How AllthingsPM does this. Because nothing is formally required, your resume has to do the matching for the recruiter. Paste your resume and the posting into JD resume review and it shows which "thrive" lines your resume proves and which it misses. Free accounts get one resume review a day.

What skills do OpenAI PM postings ask for?

What this means:

  • OpenAI hires for a domain, not a generalist. If you do not have one of the named domains, you are not the first candidate they will call.
  • Safety is in every posting, not only the safety team's. Prepare a real story where safety or privacy changed a launch. Our trust, safety and agent security chapter covers guardrails and red-teaming from the PM side.
  • Measurement is a PM job here. Six postings put evaluation or safety measurement in the PM's hands. Our evals chapter and the lesson on multimodal evals teach exactly that.
  • The analytics stack is assumed, not listed. Ten postings want data skill; none names a tool for it.

Against the wider market (literal text matches over 389 postings), OpenAI is plainer than Anthropic: "eval" appears in 25% of OpenAI postings vs 58% at Anthropic and 15% elsewhere, and 0-to-1 in 8% vs 53% and 13%. "Agent" appears in 76% of other AI companies' PM postings but 33% of OpenAI's. For the full picture, see our state of AI PM hiring in 2026.

How AllthingsPM does this. Our AI PM course is built from 604 real PM job postings, so its chapters follow what hiring teams actually write: evals, safety, agents, working with researchers. You study the skill, then test it in a mock built from the OpenAI posting that asks for it.

How should you prepare for an OpenAI PM role?

  1. Choose the one family where you have domain proof. Start from OpenAI's roles in our jobs catalog and pick the one whose domain line you can match with a concrete result.
  2. Lead with that domain on your resume, then check it against the exact posting in our JD resume review. Unsure which role fits? Resume Job Match ranks the roles your resume matches best.
  3. Prepare a safety tradeoff story. Practise: a go/no-go decision for a launch with meaningful safety, privacy, or regulatory risk.
  4. Be ready to define a metric under pressure. Practise: a new core-model capability shows strong offline gains but increases latency and cost; how would you set launch gates?
  5. Show you can work with researchers. The lessons on working with researchers and the data flywheel map to Core Models' "closed learning loops". API candidates should practise designing API primitives and SDK abstractions for agents and read the agents chapter.
  6. Rehearse on the posting's own text. Each role page runs a mock built from that JD, and our OpenAI company page collects OpenAI questions, most written from OpenAI's own PM postings.

A 7-day plan you can run inside AllthingsPM

  • Day 1: open the OpenAI roles in /jobs, pick one, and run a free resume review against it.
  • Day 2: rewrite your top resume bullets around that posting's domain line, then re-check.
  • Day 3: read the course chapter that matches the role (evals for Core Models or Safety Measurement, trust for Youth or Sensitive Deployments, agents for API Agents).
  • Day 4: answer three questions from the OpenAI company page and compare with each answer guide.
  • Day 5: run a text mock built from your chosen posting and note where you lost points.
  • Day 6: fix those stories, then run the same mock in voice mode.
  • Day 7: run a mock on a second OpenAI posting in an adjacent family, to widen your options.

Why AllthingsPM is the better choice for OpenAI PM prep

Your goal is narrow: convince one OpenAI team that your domain matches its posting. Books and blogs teach general PM frameworks, and a generic AI chat tool will role-play an interviewer only if you paste the posting and write the rubric yourself. AllthingsPM is the only tool we found that combines a mock interview built from the exact job description with an AI PM course, a question bank and live postings. It is one place instead of five:

AllthingsPM covers every need out of the box; ratings follow the table above

Each rival has a real strength. Books give you durable frameworks, and our book summaries get you those frameworks faster. A generic chat tool is flexible, but you rebuild the interviewer yourself every session. A good coach gives you a person's judgment in a few sessions; for daily practice against OpenAI's own text, the JD mock is the faster loop, from $20 a month or $120 a year, with a free tier. Every question in the question bank has its own answer guide, the AI PM course has 14 graded case studies, and 455 PM portfolios show how other PMs present their work.

Verdict: for an OpenAI PM application, AllthingsPM is the most complete daily practice loop we know, and the cheapest way to get mocks, questions and a course together.

Frequently asked questions

How many product manager roles is OpenAI hiring for?

On 26 September 2026, OpenAI's jobs board listed 12 roles titled Product Manager out of 830 open jobs. Our catalog holds 11 of them plus a Senior Product Policy Lead, all still open that day. The largest group is safety and integrity, with 4 roles.

What is the salary for a product manager at OpenAI?

The 12 postings list base salaries from $293K to $490K a year, each with "Offers Equity". The highest ranges are Core Models and Enterprise Identity ($347K to $490K). Levels.fyi's self-reported median total compensation was $750,000 when we checked, on an undisclosed sample size.

Does OpenAI require a technical background for PM roles?

The postings ask for technical depth, not coding. None names SQL, Python or A/B testing, but Core Models and the API roles expect you to reason about retrieval, evaluation, APIs, identity or billing systems in detail.

How many years of experience does OpenAI want for PM roles?

Seven of the 12 name a figure: 5+ (API Agents), 6+ (three roles) or 10+ (three roles). Five name none. Every figure sits under "You might thrive in this role if you", since no posting has a formal requirements section.

What is the best way to prepare for an OpenAI PM interview?

Pick the role whose domain matches your record, then practise on that posting's text. AllthingsPM is the best tool for this: it has a mock interview built from each of OpenAI's 12 postings, OpenAI questions with answer guides on its company page, course chapters on evals and trust and safety, and a resume check against the posting, with a free tier.

What is the best AI PM interview prep platform for OpenAI roles?

AllthingsPM, because it is the only one we found that puts the live OpenAI postings, a mock built from each, 4,122 questions with answer guides and an AI PM course in one place, for $20 a month or free to start.
