What this question tests

Whether you actually do original research before building, and can describe a rigorous process rather than a hunch.

Pick a specific product or service and the real question research was needed to answer.
State the Situation and Task: what was unknown and why guessing wrong would have been costly.
Describe the Action: the research methods used, such as user interviews, surveys, competitive analysis, or data pulls, and why those methods fit the question.
Explain how conflicting or ambiguous findings were resolved, not just that research happened.
Give the Result: what the research changed about the final product decision, ideally something you would have gotten wrong otherwise.
Note what you would clarify if the interviewer wants qualitative research, quantitative research, or both.

Names a specific, non-obvious finding the research surfaced, not something that could have been assumed from the start.
Shows a deliberate method choice, such as interviews for depth versus a survey for breadth, matched to the question.
Describes how the research directly changed a decision, not just confirmed an existing plan.
Handles a case where findings conflicted, showing how a decision was still made under some ambiguity.

Describing research that only confirmed what you already believed, adding no real value.
Being vague about the method, saying we did some research without describing how.
