What this question tests
Whether your approach to understanding customer needs is systematic and evidence based rather than just intuition.
How to approach it
- Start with what customers say they want, through interviews, support tickets, and reviews, since stated needs surface real pain points.
- Separate stated wants from underlying needs by asking why repeatedly, since customers often ask for a feature that solves a deeper problem differently.
- Layer in behavioral data, like usage logs and drop off points, since what customers do can contradict what they say.
- Validate with a lightweight test, a prototype or a smaller rollout, before committing full engineering effort.
- Give a concrete example from your own experience to ground the answer.
What a strong answer includes
- Distinguishes qualitative discovery (interviews) from quantitative validation (usage data), showing both are needed.
- Gives a real example where the stated request differed from the actual underlying need.
- Mentions closing the loop, going back to customers after shipping to confirm the need was actually met.
Common mistakes
- Relying only on a single source, like sales requests or one loud customer.
- No example, leaving the answer abstract and unconvincing.
Likely follow-up questions
- Tell me about a time customer feedback led you in the wrong direction.
- How do you weigh a vocal minority against a silent majority of users?
